Job Overview

Purpose of Position:

Under supervision, with some degree of independent initiative and judgment, this role is responsible for collecting patient meal order preferences and delivering meals to patients. This includes setting up and loading meal trays onto carts, inspecting and transporting meals to designated rooms, and collecting and returning empty trays and/or food carts, along with performing other related tasks as required.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Ensures that the handheld tablet is fully functional prior to visiting patients to gather meal order preferences.
  • Welcomes patients; discusses and records their menu selections for the following day's meals, adhering to dietary restrictions as necessary; and confirms and inputs patients' choices at the bedside using a handheld tablet.
  • Inspects patients' trays for allergens and special requests; ensures proper reheating and accuracy, confirming that all items on the tray ticket are present; adds hot beverages and additional items before serving to patients, as needed.
  • Makes additional rounds to ensure all patients have provided their selections, as appropriate.
  • In accordance with meal time schedules and infection control protocols, delivers meal trays via carts to assigned units, utilizing two patient identifiers and patient scripting when serving trays or food to patients, and collects soiled trays for return to the kitchen area for cleaning.
  • Delivers nourishments and enteral feeding, and assembles and delivers late trays as required.
  • Engages in service recovery to address patient concerns whenever possible, including delivering additional items to patients in accordance with their dietary restrictions.
  • Effectively communicates and collaborates with patients and the interdisciplinary team to resolve any issues regarding patients' understanding of menu selections.
  • Reviews diet orders and compiles a list of patients who were not seen and need to be visited by the next shift.
  • Conducts daily service satisfaction rounds and enters results into a computer program, such as Experiencia or a similar system.
  • Records pertinent information obtained from patients into CBORD, EPIC, and/or other record systems, and periodically reviews patient menus to ensure preferences, selections, and allergens are accurately reflected.
  • Assists with the collection of statistics and prepares menu-related reports as requested by supervisors, managers, or dietitians.
  • Under supervision, aids in the onboarding of new food service staff in the department as needed.
  • Assists with answering phones, processing changes in the computer system(s), and performing other related tasks as required.
  • This is a full-time position; will include working weekends and holidays.
Minimum Qualifications
1. High School Diploma or its educational equivalent; and six (6) months of full-time satisfactory experience in a hotel, restaurant, hospitality, customer service, or food service environment; and
2. Completion of an NYC Health + Hospitals food service training program within three (3) months of appointment.
