Job Overview

Position Summary: Under the guidance of a Registered Nurse, the Operating Room Technician is responsible for various tasks related to the preparation, planning, and participation in surgical procedures, adhering to established hospital protocols and standards. This role requires a commitment to understanding and following compliance regulations as they evolve.

Qualifications:
• High School Diploma or Equivalent.
• Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program.
• Current BLS-CPR certification is mandatory.
• Certification in Surgical Technology is required.

Experience:
1. Must provide proof of employment as a surgical technologist in a healthcare environment for at least one year within the last four years; or 2. Be currently serving in a federal government capacity related to surgical duties; or 3. Hold an LPN license with a minimum of one year of clinical experience as an LPN (this option is available only if previous recruitment efforts were unsuccessful).

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Adhere to best practices for surgical attire.
    1. Utilize hospital-provided surgical attire, including scrubs, shoes, head coverings, masks, jackets, and identification badges.
    2. Wear a surgical mask when handling open sterile supplies and equipment.
    3. Change scrubs if returning from outside or if they become soiled.
  2. Implement recommended hand hygiene practices in the perioperative environment.
    1. Maintain healthy skin and nail conditions and adhere to jewelry policies.
    2. Follow standardized procedures for hand washing and surgical hand scrubbing.
  3. Maintain a sterile field during procedures.
    1. Ensure all personnel within the sterile field follow strict protocols.
    2. Utilize sterile drapes to establish and maintain a sterile environment.
    3. Monitor and maintain the integrity of the sterile field at all times.
  4. Collaborate with the supervising RN to coordinate patient care.
    1. Participate in Universal Protocol Time Out to confirm patient identity, procedure, and site.
    2. Communicate any changes in surgical preferences promptly.
    3. Recognize and report changes in patient conditions to appropriate personnel.
  5. Administer medications safely and document accordingly.
    1. Adhere to labeling policies for containers and syringes.
    2. Report medication totals at the end of procedures.
  6. Assist the surgical team with various tasks during procedures.
    1. Demonstrate knowledge of surgical procedures and maintain competency.
    2. Assist in patient positioning and preparation for surgery.
    3. Anticipate the needs of the surgeon during operations.
  7. Utilize and maintain surgical equipment properly.
    1. Demonstrate knowledge of equipment usage and cleaning protocols.
    2. Ensure proper patient positioning and transfer equipment is used.
  8. Participate in emergency preparedness and response training.
  9. Engage in professional development and community involvement activities.
    1. Participate in team meetings and clinical updates.
    2. Serve as a preceptor for new staff and students.
  10. Ensure effective communication during patient handoffs.
    1. Provide comprehensive reports to incoming personnel regarding patient status and care details.
The compensation for this role ranges from $24.50 to $38.23 per hour.
