About Our Organization
We are seeking a dedicated Bilingual Community Engagement Officer fluent in Ukrainian and Russian to become a vital part of our Ethnic Minority and Traveller Achievement Service (EMTAS) within the Education and Skills Service at West Sussex County Council. Our team is committed to providing exceptional support to students from diverse ethnic backgrounds, including those from Gypsy Roma Traveller (GRT) communities and individuals for whom English is an Additional Language (EAL).
As a member of EMTAS, you will play a crucial role in offering guidance, support, and resources to children, families, and the community. We also provide training for educational staff and collaborate with families to address challenges in education, emphasizing the significance of maintaining the home language alongside English.
The Role
Salary: NJC Grade 9 £33,945 to £36,648 per annum, pro rata £23,817 to £25,714 per annum
Contract Type: Fixed Term/Secondment
Working Hours: 30 hours per week, part-time, Term Time Only
Location: Countywide
Important Note: Candidates must be prepared to travel across the County, including to areas not easily reachable by public transport.
We are excited to welcome a Ukrainian & Russian speaker to our EMTAS team, where you will collaborate closely with our Advisory Teachers.
Your language proficiency will be instrumental in assisting students and their families who face language barriers. You will serve as a bridge between home and educational institutions, facilitating effective communication and partnership through interpretation and outreach support.
Your contributions will be essential in shaping the role, providing cultural insights, and supporting newly arrived families in West Sussex. A strong understanding of the experience of arriving in the UK is advantageous.
Fluency in spoken and written Russian/Ukrainian is a must, along with a good command of English for translation purposes.
We seek individuals who are passionate about empowering students and families facing language challenges, demonstrating professionalism to foster positive relationships. Attention to detail is crucial for producing reports and maintaining accurate records.

- Knowledgeable about relevant legislation and its application in practice.
- Recognizes the limits of personal accountability and seeks guidance when necessary.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Educated to A-Level standard or equivalent.
- Demonstrated fluency in the required languages.
- Proven assessment skills with a focus on regular reviews and risk management.
- Experience in prioritizing tasks and meeting deadlines effectively.
- Background in partnership working with service users to identify issues and develop solutions.
- Experience in building effective relationships within multi-agency settings.
- Proven ability to manage risk within a caseload.
- Strong IT skills.
- Valid driving license.
