Director of Advancement and Strategic Partnerships

The Director of Advancement and Strategic Partnerships will lead the development and implementation of a comprehensive fundraising strategy to ensure the long-term sustainability of NYC Outward Bound Schools. This includes cultivating and stewarding relationships with major donors, corporations, and foundations to secure gifts that support the organization's mission and strategic priorities.
This role requires a seasoned development professional with a proven track record of success in fundraising, strategic planning, and team leadership. The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with diverse stakeholders, including donors, board members, and staff.
The Director of Advancement and Strategic Partnerships will work closely with the CEO, Board, and development team to develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising plan, including annual giving, major gifts, corporate and foundation relations, and special events. This role will also be responsible for managing and developing a portfolio of major donors and prospects, as well as identifying and pursuing new funding opportunities.
The successful candidate will be a strategic thinker with a passion for education and a commitment to the mission of NYC Outward Bound Schools. They will be able to work independently and as part of a team, with a strong focus on collaboration, communication, and results-driven outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy to achieve annual and long-term fundraising goals
- Cultivate and steward relationships with major donors, corporations, and foundations to secure gifts that support the organization's mission and strategic priorities
- Manage and develop a portfolio of major donors and prospects, including identifying and pursuing new funding opportunities
- Work closely with the CEO, Board, and development team to develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising plan, including annual giving, major gifts, corporate and foundation relations, and special events
- Develop and maintain a multi-channel calendar of events and engagement activities to increase donations from current and new donors
- Prepare and present regular reports on progress toward fundraising goals
- Build and maintain strong relationships with diverse stakeholders, including donors, board members, and staff
- Recruit, hire, mentor, and supervise staff to effectively attain the goals of the department and the organization
- Monitor organizational culture and employee morale to identify improvement opportunities
- Provide regular meaningful feedback, coaching, and support to direct reports in alignment with NYC Outward Bound Schools' mission, vision, and core values
Requirements:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in development/advancement with a non-profit organization, with at least 3 years in a leadership or management position
- Demonstrated success in all aspects of institutional advancement, with a track record of successful fundraising efforts from diversified sources and an entrepreneurial approach to philanthropy
- Experience in the effective engagement of a board
- Proficiency in data-driven strategic planning, including the ability to develop and implement comprehensive plans and track progress toward the plan's ultimate goals
- Demonstrated ability to build trust, work collegially, and achieve influence across a wide range of diverse stakeholders
- Demonstrated skills in harnessing and growing team talent to deliver on the goals of development and communication initiatives
- Ability to generate innovative ideas, originate action without instruction, take initiative, and prioritize tasks effectively
- Ability to remain detail-oriented while also maintaining focus on the big picture
- Skilled in working independently and following through on assignments with minimal direction
- Demonstrated flexibility, maturity, and ability to juggle competing priorities
- Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal; experience and skill in public speaking and presentations
- Unquestionable integrity and ethical standards in leadership
- Excellent digital literacy skills, including but not limited to Microsoft Office and Google
- Familiarity with the field of education is a plus

Location:
