Position Overview

The University of Oklahoma is seeking a dedicated individual to join our team as a Research Laboratory Supervisor. This role is integral to the management of a fundamental science research facility, ensuring that our operations align with the highest standards of excellence in cancer research.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Directs the formulation and execution of laboratory operational guidelines and protocols for basic science researchers, ensuring optimal infrastructure and resources are in place for effective performance.
  • Establishes and oversees an inventory management system for laboratory supplies and equipment, ensuring timely maintenance and repairs.
  • Develops and implements strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing the growth and efficiency of the basic science research laboratories, managing diverse projects to meet financial and operational objectives.
  • Creates methodologies and procedures for biomedical applications, conducts data analysis, and presents findings to both scientific communities and the public.
  • Collaborates with researchers and medical personnel to plan and assess projects, providing expertise to enhance data collection and analysis, while developing project timelines and standardized operating procedures.
  • Acts as a pivotal link between laboratories, researchers, and principal investigators, fostering cross-functional research collaborations and opportunities.
  • Responsible for program analysis and identifying potential funding sources, contributing to the planning and construction of new laboratory facilities as needed.
  • Designs and maintains training programs for laboratory technicians and researchers, ensuring a safe working environment for all personnel.
  • Provides management with comprehensive updates on project progress, risks, outcomes, and laboratory performance metrics.
  • Performs additional duties as required to fulfill the responsibilities of the position.
Qualifications:

Required Education: A Master's degree in Biological Science, Chemistry, Physical Science, or a related discipline AND:
  • A minimum of 60 months of experience in a basic science research environment, including at least 24 months in a senior supervisory or leadership capacity.
Equivalency/Substitution: A Bachelor's degree in Biological Science, Chemistry, or Physical Science may be accepted along with 24 months of relevant experience, totaling 84 months of experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • A Master's degree in Biological Sciences.
  • 4-8 years of experience in cancer research, with 2-4 years in laboratory management.
Essential Skills:
  • In-depth knowledge of laboratory safety protocols and compliance with Federal, State, and University regulations.
  • Proficient in training and supervising staff.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Competent in using computers and relevant software applications.
  • Ability to analyze scientific data and contribute to publications in scientific journals.
Working Environment:
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to stand for extended periods, perform reaching, bending, and walking activities, and demonstrate manual dexterity.
  • Environmental Conditions: Work within a laboratory setting, with potential exposure to biohazardous materials and bloodborne pathogens.
