Position Overview

The Facilities Operations Supervisor will collaborate with the Assistant Director of Operations to oversee personnel and the daily functions of the animal facilities. This role includes providing training and support to animal husbandry staff while ensuring that the implementation of policies and procedures aligns with Boston University’s standards of care for research animals. The supervisor must be adaptable and prepared to work in dynamic environments, including facilities housing various species.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operational Oversight: Manage all facets of daily operations within the Animal Facilities to ensure seamless functionality.
  • Customer Engagement: Represent the Animal Science Center with exemplary customer service, assisting the research community in their initiatives.
  • Staff Management: Effectively lead and mentor staff, fostering an environment conducive to learning and development.
  • Project Leadership: Spearhead facility maintenance efforts, oversee repairs, and initiate projects aimed at enhancing operational efficiency.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • In-depth knowledge of animal husbandry practices, methods, and standards.
  • Familiarity with laboratory operations and protocols.
  • Ability to cultivate positive and constructive workplace relationships.
  • Strong time management skills and capability to work independently.
  • Flexibility to adapt to evolving work environments.
  • Understanding of local, state, and federal regulations related to animal husbandry.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Proficient communication skills across various platforms, including computers, tablets, and smartphones, with the ability to instruct others on their use.

Educational Background:

  • High School diploma or GED with 7+ years of animal experience, or a Bachelor’s Degree with 5+ years of animal experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years in a leadership or supervisory role within an animal research environment.
  • Experience with multiple laboratory species is preferred.
  • ALAT certification is required; LAT certification is preferred.
