Position Summary

The Carrier Sales Specialist will play a crucial role in developing, enhancing, and sustaining partnerships with reputable carriers. This position is centered around identifying new carrier opportunities, managing a robust network of carriers, negotiating competitive rates, and ensuring the provision of timely and efficient transportation services, thereby delivering a superior experience for our clients. The focus will be on domestic and cross-border specialized heavy haul transportation, handling oversized and overweight shipments, including construction machinery, industrial equipment, and large infrastructure components. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional communication skills and the resilience necessary to thrive in a dynamic environment while juggling multiple responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Specialized Transportation Management: This role emphasizes the management of specialized heavy haul logistics, which typically includes the coordination and procurement of transportation for oversized and overweight shipments. This involves utilizing specialized trailers and equipment, as well as meticulous route planning to navigate the complexities of transporting substantial loads safely and efficiently. Responsibilities include securing necessary permits, planning routes that comply with weight restrictions and clearances, and overseeing the loading and transportation processes. Close collaboration with clients, drivers, and subcontractors is essential to ensure timely and cost-effective delivery while adhering to stringent safety and regulatory standards.
  • Carrier Relationship Development: Establish and nurture relationships with carriers, dispatchers, and load planners. Maintain ongoing communication with carriers to secure additional capacity and manage existing accounts. Act as the primary point of contact between drivers and clients to address issues and ensure satisfaction.
  • Carrier Sourcing and Negotiation: Identify and establish new carrier partnerships to broaden the carrier network. Leverage Transportation Management Systems (TMS) and other software tools to make informed decisions regarding carrier selection and load assignments. Ensure accurate completion of assigned loads, including the coding of accessorial charges, and negotiate rates and service agreements for both spot and dedicated business.
  • Service Quality Management: Oversee the carrier network to maintain high service standards and client satisfaction. Strategically align available carrier equipment with open loads to optimize efficiency. Monitor shipments to guarantee on-time delivery and promptly address any transportation-related issues.
  • Expectation Alignment: Ensure that each partner carrier fully understands all customer and company expectations for each load at the point of dispatch. Communicate shipment details and process instructions clearly and ensure timely responses and tracking through appropriate communication methods or TMS.
  • Data Management and Technology Use: Utilize internal and external customer TMS and related technology tools to ensure all transactions, documentation, and interactions are accurately recorded and compliant with company standard operating procedures.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Work in partnership with internal teams to align carrier capacity with customer demands and operational objectives. Communicate effectively with colleagues across shifts to ensure seamless operations.
  • Market Awareness: Stay informed about industry trends and market conditions, demonstrating the ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
  • Additional Responsibilities: Perform other duties as assigned to support overall logistics and sales functions.

Qualifications

  • Strong organizational and administrative capabilities to manage multiple shipments and deadlines.
  • Basic problem-solving skills to address disruptions in shipping schedules or other logistics challenges.
  • Attention to detail in tracking shipments, updating records, and managing documentation.
  • Well-developed interpersonal and customer service skills, maintaining professionalism and respect in all interactions.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to new conditions, priorities, or challenges in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • A collaborative team player with a focus on independent results.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required; a Bachelor's degree in Business, Supply Chain, or a related field is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Transportation Management Systems (TMS) and a basic understanding of the logistics industry.
  • Prior experience in logistics, transportation, sales, or a service-oriented role is preferred.
  • Proficient in computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).

Work Environment and Physical Demands

  • Ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods.
  • Frequent computer usage and typing, requiring specific vision abilities and fine motor skills.
  • Regular interactions with others, necessitating effective verbal and written communication.
  • Cognitive skills required for task completion, including learning and problem-solving.
  • Typical office environment with moderate noise levels.
  • Consistent and predictable attendance is essential.
  • Light lifting of up to 20 pounds may be necessary.
