Position Overview:

The primary objective of the Clinical Nutrition Specialist role is to conduct patient evaluations, assessments, ongoing evaluations, care plan formulation, and nutritional education for patients and their families. The Clinical Nutrition Specialist consistently collaborates with medical professionals and other healthcare team members to guarantee that patients receive exceptional nutritional care. This role aligns with the mission, vision, values, and strategic objectives of Methodist Health System.

Qualifications:

Preferred experience of 1-2 years in NICU and/or acute care settings.

A bachelor's degree fulfilling academic standards, successful completion of an accredited dietetic internship, and eligibility to sit for the American Dietetic Registration Exam; or a bachelor's degree from an accredited Coordinated Undergraduate Program in Dietetics with a focus on Clinical Nutrition and eligibility for the American Dietetics Registration Exam; or

A master's degree meeting academic standards and successful completion of an accredited dietetic internship, along with six months of experience in Clinical Nutrition and eligibility for the American Dietetic Registration Exam.

Maintains a high level of professionalism.

Communicates effectively with physicians, patients, family members, and other healthcare staff.

Possesses the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care for patients across all age groups, from pediatric to geriatric.

Understands growth and development principles throughout the lifespan and can assess data relevant to the patient's needs, providing care as outlined in departmental protocols.

Additional Responsibilities:

  1. Accurately assesses patients at nutritional risk according to screening protocols.
  2. Demonstrates the ability to evaluate and re-evaluate patient needs in a timely manner.
  3. Responds to requests and consultations promptly.
  4. Documents nutritional interventions in a detailed, accurate, and appropriate manner.
  5. Recommends additional nutritional therapies as necessary.
  6. Develops individualized care plans.
  7. Collaborates with other healthcare professionals to create interdisciplinary care plans and discharge strategies.
  8. Creates educational plans based on assessed needs.
  9. Evaluates patient and family learning needs, identifying barriers to understanding and preferred learning methods.
  10. Effectively communicates dietary requirements, restrictions, and food-drug interactions.
  11. Respects the spiritual, cultural, and privacy needs of patients and families.
  12. Stays informed about disease states and advancements in nutrition to ensure the highest quality of care.
  13. Participates in monitoring and reporting quality indicators for clinical nutrition and food services.
  14. Assists with food production, policy development, and special projects as needed.
  15. Completes other assigned duties.

Licenses and Certifications (Required):

Registration with the American Dietetic Association, including continuing education hours to maintain registration; License with the Texas Board of Examiners of Dietitians, with required education hours to maintain licensure.
