Position Overview:
The primary objective of the Clinical Nutrition Specialist role is to conduct patient evaluations, nutritional assessments, care plan formulation, and provide dietary education to patients and their families. This position involves regular collaboration with medical professionals to guarantee that patients receive optimal nutritional support. The role aligns with the mission, vision, values, and strategic objectives of Methodist Health System.
Qualifications:
Preferred experience includes 1-2 years in NICU or acute care settings.
Candidates must possess an undergraduate degree that meets academic standards, have successfully completed an accredited dietetic internship, and be eligible for the American Dietetic Registration Exam; alternatively, a degree from an accredited Coordinated Undergraduate Program in Dietetics with a focus on Clinical Nutrition and eligibility for the American Dietetics Registration Exam is acceptable; or
A Master's Degree that meets academic standards along with completion of an accredited dietetic internship, coupled with six months of experience in Clinical Nutrition and eligibility for the American Dietetic Registration Exam.
Key Responsibilities:
- Make independent and responsible decisions.
- Exhibit self-motivation and initiative.
- Maintain professionalism in all interactions.
- Communicate effectively with physicians, patients, families, and other staff members.
- Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care for patients across all age groups, from pediatric to geriatric.
- Understand growth and development principles and assess patient data to meet their needs as per departmental guidelines.
Additional Responsibilities:
1. Assess patients at nutritional risk according to screening policies.
2. Evaluate and reassess patient needs in a timely manner as per policy.
3. Respond to consultations and requests promptly.
4. Document nutrition interventions accurately and comprehensively.
5. Recommend additional nutritional therapies as required.
6. Develop personalized care plans.
7. Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to create interdisciplinary care and discharge plans.
8. Create educational plans based on assessed needs.
9. Identify patient and family learning needs and barriers to understanding.
10. Clearly explain dietary requirements, restrictions, and interactions between food and medications.
11. Respect the spiritual, cultural, and privacy needs of patients and families.
12. Stay informed about disease states and advancements in nutrition to provide high-quality care.
13. Participate in monitoring and reporting quality indicators related to clinical nutrition and food services.
14. Assist with food production, policy development, and special projects as needed.
15. Complete other assigned duties as necessary.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
Registration with the American Dietetic Association and completion of continuing education to maintain registration; a license from the Texas Board of Examiners of Dietitians and completion of continuing education to maintain licensure.
