Position Overview:

The primary role of the Clinical Nutrition Specialist is to conduct patient evaluations, nutritional assessments, care plan formulation, and provide nutrition education to patients and their families. This position requires regular collaboration with physicians and other healthcare professionals to ensure optimal nutrition care for patients. The Clinical Nutrition Specialist supports the mission, vision, values, and strategic objectives of Methodist Health System.

Qualifications:

Preferred experience includes 1-2 years in NICU or acute care settings.

Applicants must possess an undergraduate degree that meets academic standards, successful completion of an accredited dietetic internship, and eligibility to take the American Dietetic Registration Exam; or a degree from an accredited Coordinated Undergraduate Program in Dietetics with a focus on Clinical Nutrition and eligibility for the American Dietetics Registration Exam; or

A Master's Degree that meets academic criteria and successful completion of an accredited dietetic internship, along with six months of experience in Clinical Nutrition and eligibility for the American Dietetic Registration Exam.

Key Responsibilities:

- Make independent and responsible decisions.
- Demonstrate initiative and self-motivation.
- Maintain professionalism in all interactions.
- Communicate effectively with physicians, patients, families, and other staff members.
- Exhibit knowledge and skills necessary to provide care for patients across all age groups, from pediatric to geriatric.
- Understand principles of growth and development and assess patient data to provide appropriate care as per departmental guidelines.

Additional Duties:

1. Assess patients at nutritional risk following established screening protocols.
2. Evaluate and reassess patient needs promptly and accurately.
3. Respond to consultations and requests in a timely manner.
4. Document nutrition interventions in a clear and precise manner.
5. Recommend additional nutritional therapies as necessary.
6. Develop individualized care plans.
7. Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to create interdisciplinary care plans and discharge strategies.
8. Create educational plans based on patient needs assessments.
9. Identify patient and family learning needs and barriers to education.
10. Clearly explain dietary requirements, restrictions, and food-drug interactions.
11. Respect the spiritual, cultural, and privacy needs of patients and families.
12. Stay informed about disease states and advancements in nutrition to ensure high-quality care.
13. Participate in monitoring and reporting quality indicators related to clinical nutrition and food services.
14. Assist with food production, policy development, and special projects as needed.
15. Perform other assigned duties as required.

Licenses and Certifications:

Registration with the American Dietetic Association and continuing education to maintain registration; License with the Texas Board of Examiners of Dietitians with ongoing education to uphold licensure.
