Special Needs Classroom Support Specialist

QUALIFICATIONS
  1. High school diploma or GED required, along with a minimum of 48 semester hours of college credit from an accredited institution or an associate's degree.
  2. Successful completion of the Work Keys Test as required by the Alabama State Department of Education.
  3. Must comply with the suitability criteria for employment under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  1. Ability to observe and perform duties consistent with those of the special education instructor.
  2. Capable of understanding and interpreting both verbal and written instructions related to educational procedures and classroom activities.
  3. Effective communication skills, both oral and written, to assist the special education instructor in program execution.
  4. Physical capability to lift and manage students of various ages and sizes.
  5. Able to move and lift moderately heavy objects.
  6. Physical and emotional dexterity to perform necessary tasks and navigate the classroom environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  1. Assist in academic, therapeutic, and recreational activities under the guidance of a certified special education instructor.
  2. Work with small groups of students to reinforce and re-teach concepts introduced by the instructor.
  3. Provide individual support to students requiring additional attention.
  4. Facilitate independent study, enrichment tasks, remedial assistance, and follow-up work as directed by the instructor.
  5. Support the instructor in activities such as rote memorization, reading, and storytelling.
  6. Help the instructor by reviewing student notebooks and daily assignments.
  7. Contribute to routine classroom clerical and organizational tasks.
  8. Assist in preparing instructional materials, bulletin boards, and learning displays.
  9. Support non-instructional classroom duties, including snack time, breaks, and personal hygiene needs as instructed.
  10. Set up and store audio-visual equipment for classroom use.
  11. Supervise small groups of students during library visits under librarian supervision.
  12. Assist in supervising students during lunch, assemblies, physical education, off-campus activities, and assessments.
  13. Maintain confidentiality of information as per school policy.
  14. Exhibit high ethical and professional standards expected of all staff members.
  15. Participate in professional development and training activities as mandated by the State Department of Education.
  16. Assume other reasonable job-related responsibilities as assigned by the immediate supervisor.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
The terms of employment will align with the Board's Policy Manual and Salary Schedule for Instructional Aides.

EVALUATION
Performance evaluation will be conducted in accordance with the Board's policy on Evaluation of Support Personnel.
