Special Education Support Specialist

QUALIFICATIONS
  1. High school diploma or GED is required, along with a minimum of 48 semester hours of credit from an accredited college or an associate's degree from a recognized institution, or
  2. Successful completion of the Work Keys Test as required by the Alabama State Department of Education.
  3. Must fulfill the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  1. Ability to observe and perform duties consistent with those of the special education teacher.
  2. Capability to understand and interpret both verbal and written instructions related to educational procedures and classroom activities.
  3. Effective communication skills, both oral and written, to assist the special education teacher in program execution.
  4. Physical ability to lift and manage students of various ages and sizes.
  5. Ability to move and lift moderately heavy objects.
  6. Physical and emotional capability to perform necessary tasks and navigate the environment as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  1. Assist in academic, therapeutic, and recreational activities under the guidance of a certified special education teacher.
  2. Work with small groups of students to reinforce and re-teach material introduced by the teacher.
  3. Provide individual support to students requiring special attention.
  4. Assist in guiding independent study, enrichment activities, remedial help, and follow-up tasks as directed by the teacher.
  5. Support the teacher in activities such as rote memorization, reading, and storytelling.
  6. Help the teacher by reviewing student notebooks and daily assignments.
  7. Assist with routine clerical and housekeeping tasks in the classroom.
  8. Help prepare instructional materials, bulletin boards, and other educational displays.
  9. Support non-instructional classroom duties, including snack time, breaks, and personal hygiene needs as directed.
  10. Set up and store audio-visual equipment for classroom activities.
  11. Supervise small groups of students during library visits under librarian supervision.
  12. Assist in supervising students during lunch, assemblies, physical education, off-campus activities, and assessments.
  13. Maintain confidentiality of information as per school policy.
  14. Exhibit a high level of ethical and professional standards expected of all staff.
  15. Participate in staff development and training activities as mandated by the State Department of Education.
  16. Perform other reasonable and job-related duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
The terms of employment will align with the provisions of the Board's Policy Manual and the Board's Salary Schedule for Instructional Aides.

EVALUATION
Performance evaluations will follow the Board's policy on Evaluation of Support Personnel.

ADDITIONAL COMPENSATION
Annual supplements based on educational qualifications:
  • 48 Semester Hours/Passing Score on WorkKeys - $750
  • Bachelor's Degree - $1000
  • Master's Degree - $1500
