Wilton, Iowa, United States Gerdau Full time

This role, under the supervision of the Engineering Manager, focuses on the implementation and enhancement of local Asset Reliability Practices (ARP). The Reliability Engineer plays a crucial role in boosting asset availability by leveraging ARP reliability tools, methodologies, and best practices. The position demands engineering and/or maintenance experience with mechanical and/or electrical systems, ideally within steel manufacturing environments. The Reliability Engineer will engage in special projects and engineering initiatives aimed at enhancing equipment reliability, optimizing maintenance expenditures, and minimizing equipment downtime. Participation in annual outage planning is essential to reduce downtime and ensure that maintenance performance aligns with equipment reliability goals. Given the nature of manufacturing operations, the incumbent may need to be on-call and available for specific projects. Occasional travel may be necessary for training and project support.

Core Responsibilities:

The Reliability Engineer will provide technical guidance and support for the implementation and sustainability of Asset Reliability Processes (ARP) to enhance safety, equipment reliability, and product quality while maximizing efficiency and cost-effectiveness by:
  • Identifying potential failures through predictive technologies.
  • Gathering, analyzing, and interpreting operational data.
  • Examining operations and failures to reduce costs and enhance equipment reliability and energy efficiency.
  • Implementing improved engineering designs and procedures in collaboration with operations, maintenance, engineering, and suppliers.
  • Ensuring the integrity of the Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) and standard operating procedures.
  • Contributing to the development of Annual Action Plans and Budgets.
  • Training operators and maintenance personnel on ARP practices.
  • Ensuring critical inspections are conducted and reviewed, with follow-up action plans executed.
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Collecting, analyzing, and reporting on asset performance while collaborating with teams to implement methods for performance improvement and sustain existing efficiencies.
  • Developing solutions and providing recommendations for significant equipment modifications, renovations, installations, additions, and replacements to support continuous improvement.
  • Assisting in planning and scheduling standard processes to effectively manage all downtime and outages.
  • Participating in ARP assessments to evaluate the effectiveness of ARP practices and formulate improvement plans.
  • Collaborating with operations, maintenance, engineering, and reliability teams to ensure the reliability of equipment across all existing and new assets.
  • Engaging in technical studies on equipment and formulating corrective action plans to maximize availability and reliability.
  • Facilitating training sessions and assisting in identifying skill development needs for plant personnel and contractors to support ARP, maintenance, and safety initiatives.
  • Identifying critical equipment spares, materials, and components, and coordinating with maintenance, procurement, and inventory teams to establish re-order processes/quantities to minimize downtime using Reliability Centered Maintenance methodologies.
  • Participating in Failure Analysis related to maintenance issues.
  • Assisting with the Annual Action Planning process.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • A four-year degree in Engineering or Material Science is required.
  • A minimum of two years of industrial experience.
  • Knowledge of asset reliability technologies and systems, with a working understanding of heavy manufacturing.
  • Basic understanding of engineering concepts and techniques.
  • Familiarity with Predictive Maintenance (PdM) techniques or other ARP tools.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively interact with associates at all organizational levels.
  • Problem-solving abilities, project management skills, and a passion for driving change are essential.
