Compensation: $175,000 to $200,000 annually, with potential for negotiation based on qualifications

This pivotal Chief Legal Officer role within a nonprofit dedicated to social and human services in New York City is now available. The Chief Legal Officer will play a crucial role as a strategic legal consultant to the executive leadership. Key responsibilities will encompass contract oversight, compliance assurance, risk assessment, and governance management. The Chief Legal Officer will direct the contract management procedures for various agreements, leases, and insurance certificates. Additionally, this position will involve researching and establishing a contract management system. Close collaboration with HR and Legal Services will be essential to ensure legal and ethical compliance. The role includes the management and mentorship of a small team. Candidates should possess around 7+ years of relevant legal experience, ideally with a background in nonprofit organizations. A Juris Doctor degree and admission to the New York State Bar are mandatory. This position operates on a hybrid schedule, requiring in-office attendance two days a week.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Act as the primary legal advisor for the organization, emphasizing contract management, compliance, risk mitigation, and governance.
  2. Supervise and manage the review of contracts related to leases, vendors, and funding sources.
  3. Identify and formulate strategies to address regulatory and legal challenges.
  4. Develop and implement policies and procedures concerning governance, regulatory compliance, and operational practices.
  5. Ensure adherence to state and federal legal requirements.
  6. Provide legal counsel to HR and Legal Services on new initiatives, client matters, and employee investigations.
  7. Lead and mentor a team of two, along with overseeing external legal counsel.
Qualifications:
  1. Approximately 7+ years of pertinent legal experience, including supervisory responsibilities.
  2. Experience as an in-house attorney within a nonprofit organization is highly desirable.
  3. Juris Doctor from an accredited law institution and active membership in the New York State Bar.
  4. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  5. Proven experience in contract management and review.
  6. Familiarity with employment law, compliance, and risk management is advantageous.
  7. Experience with contract management software implementation is a plus.
