Job Overview

Position Summary

An accomplished Media Relations Specialist with a minimum of ten years of relevant experience is sought to enhance the communications efforts of NASA's Planetary Science Division. The selected candidate will collaborate with division and agency-wide communication initiatives to effectively articulate mission objectives, achievements, and milestones to both national and international media, as well as to internal and external audiences of NASA. The role will focus on crafting engaging communications to secure timely and favorable media coverage.

  • Oversee the creation of messaging, talking points, background documents, and other media relations materials related to planetary science.
  • Manage the reception, assessment, tracking, and timely response to media inquiries.
  • Coordinate and schedule media interviews with relevant subject matter experts, addressing inquiries from news reporters.
  • Demonstrated experience in drafting Request for Technical Qualifications (RTQs) is essential.
  • May assist with periodic reporting to NASA's Office of Communications.
  • Act as a liaison between government clients and contract management.
  • Provide expert guidance and advice on media relations and opportunities.
  • Possess the ability to comprehend and communicate complex planetary science concepts.
  • Utilize experience and judgment to adhere to NASA's communication policies and procedures.
  • Must be present at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C., at least two days per week and as required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, writing, or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of relevant experience.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills, along with strong corporate-level writing and editing capabilities.
  • Experience with NASA is preferred.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Proficient in media relations across various platforms (broadcast, web, social).
  • Familiarity with editing and adherence to AP style is required.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally (10% or less) and work during evenings, holidays, and weekends as necessary.

If necessary, employees must be able to operate a motor vehicle, which may involve prolonged periods of sitting to visit other company locations. Effective communication in person, in groups, and over the phone is essential. The role may require standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing, balancing, reaching, pushing, and pulling. Employees may also need to lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
