The Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law stands as a prominent national organization dedicated to racial justice. Established in 1963 at the behest of President John F. Kennedy, the Committee employs legal advocacy to promote racial equity, striving to ensure that marginalized communities have the voice, opportunity, and power to realize the promises of democracy.


Role Summary

The Head of Media Relations collaborates closely with the Vice President of Communications to design and implement a comprehensive earned media strategy, aimed at enhancing the organization's status as a leader in racial justice advocacy. This role requires a profound commitment to social justice, a proactive approach, and a proven track record in media relations.


Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and oversee the execution of the organization's media strategy to establish the Lawyers' Committee as a thought leader in the field.
  • Guide and mentor team members focused on media relations and earned media initiatives.
  • Design, implement, and evaluate impactful media campaigns that promote the organization's mission and achievements.
  • Identify and cultivate opportunities for interviews and speaking engagements for staff to highlight the organization's expertise.
  • Provide media training sessions for staff to enhance their engagement with the media.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to amplify the organization's messaging and key narratives.
  • Engage with external media consultants and foster relationships with top-tier national journalists and editors.
  • Monitor and report on the effectiveness of media initiatives to refine strategies and enhance impact.
  • Stay abreast of emerging trends in the media landscape and adapt strategies accordingly.
  • Draft and edit opinion pieces and prepare statements for leadership during media interactions.
  • Assist in crisis communication planning and execution as necessary.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusion in all aspects of work.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, public relations, or communications preferred, or equivalent experience.
  • At least 8 years of relevant experience in communications or media.
  • Strong understanding of the media landscape related to social and racial justice issues.
  • Established relationships with media professionals.
  • A minimum of 5 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
  • Proven ability to motivate and mentor team members.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills with a keen attention to detail.
  • Experience with digital tools and social media platforms.
  • Ability to convey complex ideas to diverse audiences.
  • Capacity to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
