The Cato Institute is in search of a seasoned and proactive Senior Media Relations Manager to enhance our communications initiatives. This pivotal role focuses on refining and promoting Cato's narrative in the public policy arena, facilitating the dissemination of our research and insights through diverse media platforms. The Senior Media Relations Manager will work closely with the Executive Director of Communications and supervise the Media Coordinator.
About Cato Institute
The Cato Institute is a distinguished public policy research organization committed to the principles of individual freedom, limited governance, free enterprise, and peace. Our scholars engage in independent, nonpartisan research on a variety of policy matters.
Established in 1977, Cato draws its name from Cato's Letters, a series of essays from 18th-century England advocating for a society free from excessive governmental control. These writings inspired the founders of the American Revolution, and the enduring principles of that era—individual liberty, limited government, and free markets—remain profoundly relevant in today's interconnected world.
Key Responsibilities:
- Strategic Media Development: Collaborate with the Executive Director of Communications to craft and execute media strategies that resonate with Cato's mission and objectives.
- Media Relationship Management: Actively build and sustain relationships with journalists, editors, and media professionals to secure coverage in prominent national and international outlets.
- Research Promotion: Support the promotion of Cato's research findings, reports, and events, ensuring that critical insights reach targeted audiences through both traditional and digital media.
- Press Material Creation: Draft, review, and disseminate press releases, opinion pieces, statements, and other media-related documents.
- Media Training: Provide media training and support to Cato's scholars, preparing them for interviews, press conferences, and other media engagements.
- Crisis Communication Management: Assist in managing the organization's media responses during high-profile or sensitive situations, ensuring consistent messaging and timely communication.
- Media Monitoring and Reporting: Track media coverage and evaluate the effectiveness of outreach efforts, providing regular updates to senior leadership on media engagement metrics.
- Event Media Coordination: Organize media coverage for Cato events, including conferences and webinars, ensuring a strong media presence and post-event reporting.
- Social Media Collaboration: Work with the digital communications team to align media outreach with social media strategies, enhancing Cato's online visibility and engagement.
- Team Management: Oversee the Media Coordinator, offering guidance and mentorship to ensure the successful execution of media relations activities.
Qualifications:
- Education: A bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field; an advanced degree is advantageous.
- Experience: A minimum of 5-7 years in media relations, public relations, or communications, ideally within a think tank or public policy organization.
- Preferred Background: Experience in a newsroom or public relations setting, with an understanding of libertarian principles and Cato's mission.
- Media Network: Established relationships within the media industry, particularly in political and policy-focused outlets.
- Communication Proficiency: Exceptional writing, editing, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex ideas clearly to diverse audiences.
- Writing Portfolio: Candidates should possess significant writing experience and may be required to submit samples or complete a writing assessment.
- Strategic Insight: Proven capability to devise and implement effective media strategies aligned with organizational goals.
- Crisis Management Skills: Experience in navigating high-pressure situations and managing crisis communications effectively.
- Digital Media Knowledge: Familiarity with social media platforms and their application in media relations and public engagement.
- Leadership Experience: Background in managing or mentoring junior staff members.
