The Americans for Financial Reform Education Fund (AFREF) is on the lookout for a Media Relations Associate to assist in executing our media and communication initiatives that support our campaigns aimed at enhancing consumer protections, challenging the practices of private equity firms, and addressing the impacts of systemic inequality.
AFREF has been instrumental in advocating for significant financial reforms, including the Dodd-Frank Act and the establishment of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. We are committed to driving systemic changes in the financial landscape to promote economic, racial, and social equity. Our team collaborates with a diverse coalition of over 200 organizations, including consumer advocacy groups, civil rights organizations, labor unions, and academic institutions.
The Media Relations Associate will collaborate closely with the Communications Director to implement our comprehensive communication strategy, focusing on elevating the organization's visibility in the media and providing critical information to our policy and campaign teams. This role offers opportunities for growth and development for candidates at various experience levels.
Key Responsibilities:
- Track news relevant to AFREF's mission and share insights with relevant teams, staying informed about developments in these areas;
- Draft and refine press releases, opinion pieces, and other public-facing materials; distribute to media outlets and partner organizations;
- Foster relationships with journalists covering pertinent issues and facilitate discussions between them and our policy and campaign teams;
- Support the strengthening of AFREF's coalition by assisting partner organizations with their media outreach;
- Create, maintain, and review media contact lists;
- Update the organization's website to reflect media engagement and prepare media summaries;
- Contribute to special research projects and events as needed;
- Collaborate with colleagues to execute a cohesive communication strategy;
- Step in for the Communications Director when necessary, representing AFREF in various contexts.
Compensation:
The annual salary for the Media Relations Associate ranges from $55,000 to $70,000, based on experience. For the Media Relations Coordinator role, the salary ranges from $70,000 to $85,000. We offer a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, vision, and retirement plans.

- Existing connections with reporters and media professionals are a plus.
