Job Overview

The Cato Institute is on the lookout for a meticulous and proactive individual to become a part of our Marketing and Communications division. This role requires the execution of effective media strategies and the creation of compelling content that will be highlighted across the institute's various social media channels.

The Media Relations Coordinator will collaborate closely with the Communications team to strategically enhance the brand's visibility among leading media outlets. Key responsibilities include:

  • Crafting and refining written and video materials to bolster Cato's public image.
  • Identifying and leveraging communication opportunities that highlight the work of our scholars.
  • Advising on strategies and tactics to secure coverage across traditional and digital media platforms.

The ideal candidate should possess a strong desire to learn and embrace new challenges as they arise.

About Cato Institute

The Cato Institute is a prominent public policy research organization committed to the principles of individual liberty, limited government, free markets, and peace. Our scholars engage in independent, nonpartisan research on a broad spectrum of policy issues.

Founded in 1977, Cato draws its name from Cato's Letters, a series of essays from 18th-century England advocating for a society free from excessive governmental control. These writings inspired the architects of the American Revolution, and the enduring principles of that era—individual liberty, limited government, and free markets—remain vital in today's interconnected world.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor, manage, and evaluate media coverage related to Cato.
  • Assist in compiling media reports for senior leadership and scholars.
  • Support scholars in navigating media interactions.
  • Enhance the visibility of scholars through media outreach.
  • Build and maintain relationships with media professionals and journalists on behalf of Cato.
  • Innovate new strategies to promote scholars to external media.
  • Undertake additional tasks and projects as directed by a supervisor within the media relations framework.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field.
  • 2-3 years of relevant professional experience, ideally in media relations or content management.
  • Familiarity with libertarian principles and the mission of Cato is advantageous.
  • Ability to generate engaging ideas and materials that effectively convey concepts and services.
  • Creative mindset with experience in identifying target audiences and developing impactful digital campaigns.
  • Proven ability to cultivate and maintain positive relationships with diverse groups.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Organized, enthusiastic, and efficient, with the capability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Self-motivated individual capable of managing multiple competing deadlines.
  • Detail-oriented with a strong focus on quality and accuracy.
  • Adaptable team player who can prioritize and manage several concurrent projects.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with marketing automation and content management systems, such as HubSpot.
  • Solid understanding of website and marketing analytics tools.

Benefits

All employees at Cato are entitled to:

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Employer contributions to a Health Savings Account (HSA).
  • Generous vacation and sick leave policies.
  • Paid parental leave.
  • Employer-provided life and disability insurance.
  • 401(k) plan with employer matching.
  • Transit and parking benefits.
  • Discounts for pet care.
