Position Overview:

This role functions as the Aviation Operations Manager for state-level fire suppression aviation assets. The main objective of this position is to ensure the readiness and effective coordination of aviation programs in collaboration with various agencies, adhering to safety protocols and cost-efficiency in line with state and federal regulations. The individual will act as a technical mentor and consultant for the aviation program, fire management personnel, and dispatch center leadership.

As the program supervisor, this position oversees the Fixed Wing Coordinator, Helicopter Coordinator, and UAS Coordinator, facilitating the management of fire aviation bases statewide and coordinating financial aspects with the fire program and accounting departments. Participation in multiple interagency aviation committees is also required.

This position may allow for remote work within Arizona, depending on departmental needs and performance standards.

All work, including remote tasks, must be conducted within Arizona.

Key Responsibilities:

Essential duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Developing and managing aviation programs, including supervising staff, maintaining records, and approving payroll and expenditures.
  • Identifying statewide facilities to support aviation program needs and staying informed about policy changes affecting the program.
  • Creating and delivering training sessions for agency personnel and partners on aviation operations related to wildland fire management.
  • Managing contracts for aviation resources used in fire suppression, including procurement and safety compliance.
  • Coordinating with interagency partners and military flight controllers to ensure safe airspace management during wildland fire operations.
  • Representing the state on interagency committees focused on aviation matters.
  • Driving for state business as required.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Tactical applications of various aircraft in fire management.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

A valid Arizona Driver's License is required. All employees operating vehicles for state business must maintain a current driver's license and meet all training and record check requirements.
