Summary

This role is situated within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), specifically within the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) sector, focusing on Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) as part of the ICE Health Service Corps (IHSC).

The selected candidate will report to the Nurse Manager, Health Services Administrator, and Clinical Director, and this position does not involve supervisory responsibilities.

Eligibility

This position is exclusively available to USPHS officers and candidates eligible for Call to Active Duty (CAD).

Responsibilities

The incumbent will:

  • Deliver direct nursing care to detainees, applying knowledge of nursing principles and practices.
  • Administer nursing procedures as directed, adhering to established guidelines and maintaining current competency documentation.
  • Document all patient interactions utilizing the S.O.A.P.E. format, ensuring accuracy and compliance with health record protocols.
  • Assess patient needs and develop appropriate nursing care plans.
  • Gather medical histories and refer any identified issues to the appropriate medical personnel.
  • Conduct nursing triage and screenings during sick calls, following clinical guidelines.
  • Provide care in Medical Housing Units (MHU) and communicate any abnormal findings to medical providers.
  • Coordinate healthcare needs with the healthcare team and manage referrals to external providers as necessary.
  • Educate patients according to agency directives.
  • Maintain a clear separation from security and custody duties.
  • Assist medical providers during appointments by obtaining vital signs and providing necessary support.
  • Respond to emergency medical situations as required.
  • Administer medications according to established protocols, ensuring adherence to safety guidelines.
  • Maintain inventory of medical supplies and ensure quality control of laboratory reagents.

Qualifications

Applicants must possess:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Nursing and a valid nursing license.
  • Current CPR/BLS certification.
  • Professional nursing experience, preferably between zero to two years.
  • Knowledge of nursing concepts, medication administration, and patient care standards.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Physical Requirements

This role requires physical exertion, including the ability to lift objects over 30 pounds and perform emergency care tasks.
