This role is situated within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), specifically under the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO), and the ICE Health Service Corps (IHSC), Office of the Deputy Assistant Director of Clinical Services.
The selected candidate will report directly to the Nurse Manager, Health Services Administrator, and Clinical Director. This position is exclusively available to current USPHS officers and candidates for Call to Active Duty (CAD).
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver direct nursing care to detainees, applying comprehensive knowledge of nursing principles, practices, and protocols.
- Administer nursing procedures as prescribed, adhering to established guidelines and ensuring accurate documentation of all patient interactions.
- Conduct thorough assessments of patients' needs and develop appropriate nursing care plans.
- Gather medical histories from detainees and refer any identified medical issues to the physician or Advanced Practice Provider (APP) as necessary.
- Implement nursing triage processes and manage the screening of detainees during sick calls, directing patients to higher levels of care when required.
- Utilize interpretation and translation services to facilitate communication with detainees who may have limited English proficiency.
- Provide ongoing nursing care within Medical Housing Units (MHU) and promptly inform medical providers of any concerning findings.
- Support psychiatric care as needed and coordinate healthcare needs with the broader healthcare team.
- Engage in patient education and training in line with agency protocols.
- Maintain a clear boundary between healthcare provision and security/custody responsibilities.
- Assist medical providers during appointments by measuring vital signs and offering necessary support.
- Respond to emergency medical situations and deliver immediate care for injuries or illnesses as required.
- Execute medical orders from physicians, APPs, or other qualified healthcare providers in a timely manner.
- Conduct laboratory tests and collect specimens as requested.
- Ensure compliance with public health, safety, and preparedness directives to uphold environmental health standards and infection control measures.
- Oversee the maintenance of medical equipment and ensure quality control of laboratory supplies.
- Manage inventory levels of medical supplies and may initiate orders as needed.
Qualifications:
- Must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing and hold a current professional nursing license.
- A minimum of zero to two years of professional nursing experience is required.
- Comprehensive understanding of nursing concepts, principles, and practices is essential for conducting diverse nursing assessments.
- Familiarity with medication administration guidelines and the ability to recognize and address adverse effects is necessary.
- Strong interpersonal skills to effectively communicate and educate patients and colleagues.
- Spanish language proficiency is preferred but not mandatory.
The IHSC is committed to providing on-site direct patient care to ICE detainees across various facilities nationwide, managing both on-site and off-site medical care.
