Position Summary:

The Senior Reliability Engineer will play a crucial role in evaluating equipment life cycles and conducting analyses to guide investment and maintenance strategies for our assets. This expert will leverage their knowledge to pinpoint potential challenges and avert production failures or malfunctions. Additionally, this role will focus on optimizing process efficiency and ensuring our production systems can scale to meet our ambitious growth objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Formulate hypotheses and models (e.g., acceleration models) and validate them through experimental methods.
  • Design and facilitate experiments aimed at enhancing thin film solar cell performance, reliability, and stability while minimizing manufacturing costs.
  • Conduct root-cause failure analysis and component degradation assessments using techniques such as SEM/EDX, XRD, EL/PL, and other diagnostic tools. Compile and present findings effectively.
  • Lead collaborations with certification and external laboratories (including PACT, NREL, Sandia, and academic institutions) to secure necessary certifications for IEC or UL standards.
  • Develop training methods and instruct technical staff on building and testing devices for reliability, including:
    • Constructing small solar modules: encapsulation/lamination, framing, stringing/tabbing, and connectorizing for reliability testing.
    • Instrumenting and subjecting samples to accelerated chamber testing for various environmental stressors, as well as outdoor testing.
    • Characterizing solar modules through electroluminescence (EL) or photoluminescence (PL) imaging, light I-V testing, IR imaging, and other diagnostic methods.
  • Support the R&D Lab in the development of innovative techniques and equipment.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. with 1 year of experience or M.S. with 4 years of experience; BS with 8 years of experience in engineering, materials, chemistry, or a related field.
  • Experience in laboratory testing and reliability/durability assessments of electronic devices. Familiarity with solar photovoltaic cells/modules reliability testing and failure analysis is highly advantageous.
  • Proficient in probability, statistics, and experimental design (e.g., factorial DOE); experience with statistical analysis software such as JMP, Minitab, R, or similar for hypothesis testing and predictive modeling.
  • Programming skills in Python, MATLAB, or similar are a significant advantage.
  • Strong practical laboratory skills, capable of designing custom mechanical and electronic testing apparatus.
  • Extensive experience with failure analysis methodologies.
  • Ability to navigate high levels of ambiguity with a forward-thinking perspective on technology trends.
  • Demonstrated initiative and independence in a matrixed environment, with excellent communication skills.
