Job SummaryWe are seeking a highly skilled Staff Mechanical Design Engineer to join our team and contribute to the development of our high-voltage linear electromagnetic machine. As a key member of our engineering team, you will be responsible for designing and advancing new components and subsystems, managing existing concepts through development, deployment, and manufacturing, and leading projects with potential for direct reports.
Key Responsibilities- Lead and participate in brainstorming activities to develop novel ways to improve all aspects of the LEM and the Linear Generator broadly.
- Develop and optimize key mechanical and electromechanical subsystems within the LEM to drive down cost, improve performance, and deliver high reliability.
- Work with reliability and test teams to validate systems and components with fast cycles of learning for deployment into the next generation of Linear Generators.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with manufacturing engineering, NPI, and external suppliers to rapidly deploy new designs into production.
- Provide technical guidance to junior engineers and technicians, and contribute to the continuous improvement of engineering processes, tools, standards, and best practices.
- BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering + 11 years or MS + 10 years or a similar engineering field from an accredited institution.
- Deep understanding of metal castings, machining, welding/fabrication, bolted connections, datum selection, large tolerance stackup analysis, and finishing processes with the ability to identify and resolve design for manufacturability issues.
- Demonstrated experience with volume manufacturing of electric motors or generators, including: Design for Quality, inspection and testing methods, insulation system design and certification, formed and wound coil design, magnetic material specification and handling, lamination design and manufacturing.
- Extended experience working directly with suppliers, vendors and contract manufacturers to address quality or manufacturing issues.
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment, and demonstrate leadership and mentoring abilities.
- Fluent in SolidWorks or comparable CAD package. Experience with using PDM or a similar CAD version control system is preferred.
Mainspring Energy, Inc. offers a competitive salary range of $150k-$175k base + pre-IPO stock options + benefits. This position is on-site in Menlo Park, CA.
