Position Overview:

We are in search of a proactive Associate Managing Editor who will play a pivotal role in the advancement and strategic growth of select journals under the American Physiological Society (APS). The ideal candidate should possess a keen eye for detail, demonstrate initiative, and have the capability to foster strong relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders to promote the mission of APS Publications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the strategic planning and development of a designated portfolio of APS journals, focusing on enhancing their visibility within the scientific community.
  • Collaborate closely with the Editor-in-Chief, Associate Editors, and the editorial team to ensure the effective execution of strategic initiatives aimed at journal growth.
  • Utilize innovative thinking and effective communication to present new ideas that can further elevate the journals' profiles.
  • Manage relationships with authors, reviewers, and editors to ensure a seamless peer review process, delivering a top-tier experience for all parties involved.
  • Work autonomously to enhance the market reputation of APS journals and maintain their competitive edge.
  • Identify emerging research trends and coordinate the development of Calls for Papers and content collections.
  • Oversee the management of commissioned content in collaboration with the editorial team.
  • Engage with the marketing department to curate social media content for the journals, including crafting posts for various platforms and analyzing engagement metrics.
  • Monitor journal performance, track editorial activities, and organize meetings with the editorial team to ensure alignment on goals and initiatives.
  • Represent the journal at conferences and meetings, both virtually and in-person, and produce relevant presentations and reports.
  • Facilitate the onboarding and training of new Associate Editors and assist in recruiting new Editorial Board Members.
  • Manage special projects, including the development of journal-specific podcasts and initiatives aimed at early career researcher reviewers.

Qualifications:

  • Experience in scholarly publishing, particularly within scientific or medical contexts.
  • Strong understanding of editorial processes and the scientific peer review system.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, suitable for diverse audiences.
  • Proficient multitasking and organizational abilities to balance immediate tasks with long-term projects.
  • Ability to prioritize effectively and meet deadlines while collaborating with cross-functional teams.
  • Strong analytical skills, particularly in assessing journal and editorial team performance metrics.
  • Familiarity with peer review management systems and collaborative platforms.
  • Experience in social media engagement to foster community interaction.
  • Highly motivated with strong networking capabilities and editorial insight.
  • Commitment to supporting the APS mission of empowering discovery to enhance health.

Work Environment:

This position supports a remote-first work culture, with occasional in-person meetings as necessary. Flexibility in work arrangements will be encouraged to optimize productivity and outcomes.
