Job Description

The Washington Post is seeking an ambitious and innovative editor to oversee criminal justice and legal affairs coverage in D.C. and its suburbs, a crucial position that involves shepherding stories about high-profile crimes, policing and prosecutorial strategies on both a local and federal level.

We are looking for an editor with sharp news instincts and an ability to launch and execute exceptional breaking news, agenda-setting accountability reporting and enterprising examinations of some of the most important cases in the region, including the prosecutions in D.C. federal court of accused Jan. 6 rioters and former president Donald Trump.

The ideal candidate will understand how to propel insightful reporting about major trials, along with coverage that illuminates the forces driving crime and how it reverberates through communities. They should have familiarity with legal proceedings and a demonstrated ability to synthesize complicated legal matters quickly. A commitment to a variety of formats that expand our audience is vital.

Responsibilities:
Shape the criminal justice team's coverage priorities to drive scoops, sharp accountability reporting and captivating storytelling that readers cannot find anywhere else.Elevate stories to the highest standards, from conceptualization all the way through to publication. Ensure fairness, rigor, precision and excellence in story framing.Mentor and steer reporters toward their best work.Build partnerships with teams across the local desk and newsroom to facilitate the most timely, comprehensive and visually dynamic coverage.Optimize stories for digital success and embrace creative storytelling to identify the most compelling formats to engage our readers.

Preferred qualifications:
A track record of distinctive breaking news and enterprise reporting.Experience covering or editing criminal justice stories.Experience with major breaking news stories, pursuing accountability targets and developing new conceptual approaches to stories.Exceptional communication and organizational skills.A vision for high-impact accountability coverage in the public interest.A collaborative mindset and eagerness to experiment.Supervisory experience is a plus but not required.

This position is based in our Washington, D.C., newsroom.

The salary range for this position is: $122, $204, The actual salary within this range will depend on individual skills, experience and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements. This position may be eligible for a bonus or incentive program, and a member of the Talent Acquisition team will discuss bonus payment terms and conditions during the interview process.
