About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Editorial Director to join our team at the American Physiological Society. As a key member of our editorial team, you will be responsible for driving the growth and strategic development of our select number of journals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Contribute to the strategic development of our journals, working closely with the Editor-in-Chief, Associate Editors, and Editorial Board to assess, define, and oversee the implementation of strategic plans that will lead to growth in the journals.
  • Integrate strategic thinking, demonstrate creativity, and effectively communicate new ideas to drive the success of our journals.
  • Collaborate with the editorial team and Guest Editors to identify emerging areas of research and develop Calls for Papers and content collections.
  • Manage commissioned content, working closely with the editorial team to ensure timely and accurate delivery of a high-quality product.
  • Monitor and report on journal performance, track Associate Editor and Editorial Board activity, and organize and plan meetings with the editorial team.
  • Represent the journal at in-person and virtual meetings and conferences, producing presentations and reports as needed.
  • Manage special projects and initiatives, including producing journal-specific podcasts and facilitating development of early career researcher reviewers.
Requirements
  • Experience in scholarly publishing, specifically in a scientific or medical publishing setting.
  • Knowledge of editorial processes, scientific peer review, and data analysis skills, including journal and editorial team performance metrics.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills for both scientific and lay audiences, including presentation and collaboration skills.
  • Strong multitasking and organizational skills to balance both day-to-day deliverables and long-term goals/projects.
  • Excellent prioritization of tasks and projects to meet tight deadlines while collaborating with cross-functional teams.
  • Experience working with peer review management, virtual meeting, and team collaboration platforms.
  • Highly motivated with excellent networking skills and editorial acumen.
  • Engaged in support of the APS mission: empowering discovery to improve health.
