Position Overview

The Texas National Security Review (TNSR) is in search of a dynamic, detail-oriented, and passionate Senior Editor. We are interested in candidates who are ready to steer one of the leading journals in the field of international security. This is a full-time opportunity.

Please note: This position is not remote. It operates on a hybrid schedule requiring presence in the office three days a week. Candidates must reside in the Washington metro area or be willing to relocate. The role also involves travel to significant conferences pertinent to the journal's mission.

About TNSR

TNSR was conceived with the vision that a scholarly journal can transcend traditional formats, catering to those engaged in national security and international affairs. It is produced by War on the Rocks in collaboration with the University of Texas at Austin. War on the Rocks serves as the flagship publication of Metamorphic Media, a media organization based in Washington, D.C.

TNSR is a prominent and widely circulated journal, both in print and online, dedicated to publishing accessible, rigorous, peer-reviewed research that is relevant to international and national security policy. It encompasses a diverse range of disciplinary perspectives and features insightful contributions from leading policy experts and national security practitioners. The journal aims to foster dialogue between scholars and policymakers on critical issues and challenges.

Role Responsibilities

The Senior Editor will oversee the journal's editorial workflow, management, and serve as its primary public representative.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Soliciting high-quality manuscripts from both emerging and established scholars, as well as key policymakers, while making timely and constructive decisions regarding suitability and peer review.
  • Supervising the managing editor and production editor, along with part-time associate editors who are essential in guiding manuscripts through the editorial process.
  • Maintaining and enhancing TNSR's esteemed reputation for prompt and constructive peer review and efficient time from submission to publication.
  • Acting as an intellectual advocate and ambassador for TNSR.
  • Establishing daily editorial, production, communication, and management processes to uphold and advance TNSR's intellectual vision and reputation for excellence.
  • Monitoring submissions and demographic data, and generating regular performance reports based on data analysis.

This position demands intellectual curiosity coupled with exceptional management and communication skills. The ideal candidate will possess a strong desire to explore significant global issues, enjoy collaboration with leading scholars and practitioners, and be committed to enhancing TNSR's brand and audience while challenging conventional academic publishing norms.

The Senior Editor will report to the publisher of TNSR and collaborate closely with teams at the University of Texas at Austin, including key faculty members who are integral to the journal's initiatives.

Application Requirements

  • A minimum of three years of editorial experience, demonstrating substantial engagement with writing and editing.
  • A robust background in history, international relations, political science, security studies, or strategic studies, with familiarity in the relevant academic literature.
  • A Ph.D. in one of these fields or a closely related discipline.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and a commitment to quality.
  • Cross-disciplinary expertise and knowledge of historical and current strategic debates in the United States.
  • Outstanding written communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and flexibly within a small team.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in practitioner roles within government, as a Congressional staff member, or in the armed services.
  • Experience managing non-academic projects and teams.
