Position Summary

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a seasoned professional for the role of Chief Audit and Compliance Executive. This pivotal position is tasked with the development and oversight of comprehensive audit and compliance frameworks for the Commonwealth and its associated health services.

The role will report directly to the governing boards while maintaining administrative accountability to the executive leadership.


About the Audit and Compliance Division

The Audit and Compliance Division is responsible for providing independent audit and management services across the Commonwealth, ensuring integrity and compliance within all operations.

Our dedicated team conducts thorough assessments of the Commonwealth's operational controls, business processes, and compliance measures, providing recommendations for ongoing enhancement.

The Chief Audit and Compliance Executive will ensure that all activities align with established professional standards.


Key Responsibilities

This role will involve fostering professional relationships with senior leadership to maintain a robust understanding of operational strategies, technological advancements, and key initiatives. Responsibilities include:

  • Crafting risk-based audit and compliance strategies for the Commonwealth and its health services.
  • Establishing and sustaining continuous quality control measures.
  • Conducting investigations and special reviews as requested by leadership.
  • Coordinating external audits and compliance reviews.
  • Recruiting and developing a skilled team to meet annual audit and compliance objectives.
  • Identifying staff development needs and implementing training strategies.
  • Advising management on new initiatives and strategic directions.
  • Reporting quarterly to the boards on audit outcomes, compliance assessments, and significant issues.
Required Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree in business, accounting, or a related field.
  • CPA or CIA certification or equivalent healthcare credential.
  • Proven leadership experience in complex organizations, with the ability to operate effectively at a senior level.
  • A minimum of five years in a supervisory role within audit or compliance.
  • Demonstrated capability to plan, execute, and lead audit or compliance functions.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to handle multiple complex initiatives simultaneously.
  • Proficient technical skills in finance, accounting, auditing, compliance, and financial reporting.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to engage effectively with individuals at all organizational levels.
  • Capacity to foster a transparent and trusting environment focused on institutional improvement.
  • Proven experience managing sensitive information in accordance with institutional values and legal standards.
  • Commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion within the workforce.
Preferred Qualifications

  • A master's degree in business, accounting, or a related discipline.
  • Experience within higher education or healthcare sectors.
