POSITION SUMMARY

The Chief Veterinary Officer is responsible for overseeing the veterinary services team under the direct supervision of the General Manager. This role is crucial in providing leadership and ensuring the highest standards of animal care and veterinary practices. The primary objective is to support research scientists in the innovative development of therapeutic products aimed at addressing various human health issues. We are committed to excellence in animal welfare, advanced veterinary medicine, and comprehensive laboratory animal science.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Establish and manage a comprehensive laboratory animal care program, ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations and policies.
  • Act as the primary veterinarian, overseeing daily operations of the animal care program, including:
    • Ensuring adherence to company policies and USDA standards in all animal care activities.
    • Maintaining accurate documentation and records.
    • Collaborating with research teams to provide expert guidance on protocols and procedures.
    • Implementing effective methods for disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
    • Offering expertise on animal health and welfare, including anesthesia and pain management.
    • Conducting daily health assessments of all animals.
    • Managing health status control programs, including vaccinations and zoonosis prevention.
  • Oversee biosecurity measures and pathogen exclusion protocols to minimize risks.
  • Supervise the quarantine program and vendor management, ensuring compliance with health standards.
  • Direct the animal behavior and enrichment initiatives.
  • Lead and train veterinary staff, ensuring ongoing professional development and compliance with training requirements.
  • Participate in the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) as a member.
  • Provide emergency care coverage as needed.
  • Contribute to the development of company policies and ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Stay updated on new protocols and advancements in animal care.

PROBLEM SOLVING AND DECISION MAKING

Utilize expertise in animal care to independently address and resolve complex issues within the animal care program.

PLANNING AND STRATEGY

Anticipate organizational needs and develop strategic plans for resource utilization and policy implementation.

SUPERVISION

Directly supervise veterinary staff and ensure compliance with veterinary care standards across the organization.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from an accredited institution.
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in laboratory animal medicine.
  • Licensure to practice veterinary medicine in California.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to interact effectively with diverse teams.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to meet the physical demands of the position, including lifting and handling animals and equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work may involve exposure to various biological materials and chemicals in a laboratory setting.
