Position Overview

The Communication Facilitator plays a crucial role in enhancing the educational experience for students with hearing impairments. This full-time position is accountable to the Director of Education and works closely with the Education Coordinator to assist students in achieving their Individualized Transition Plans (ITEP) and diploma requirements. Collaboration with classroom teachers and other educational staff is essential to deliver a tailored, evidence-based educational program that aligns with each student's interests and needs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate effective communication through sign language, spoken English, and cultural mediation.
  • Provide interpreting services during academic sessions, meetings, and school events for students, staff, and parents.
  • Prepare for interpreting assignments by utilizing available resources and collaborating with colleagues.
  • Offer guidance on best practices for working with sign language interpreters and deaf individuals.
  • Document student progress and participate in interdisciplinary meetings to discuss educational goals.
  • Adapt materials and assistive devices to support student learning and safety.
  • Encourage student independence and monitor participation in educational and recreational activities.
  • Assist with routine personal care tasks that do not require nursing intervention.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student information and share details only on a need-to-know basis.
  • Engage in professional development to enhance interpreting skills and knowledge.

Qualifications:

  • Completion of the RID certification exam or EIPA assessment with a minimum score of 3.5.
  • A minimum of three years of interpreting experience, preferably in a K-12 educational setting.
  • Preferred: Bachelor's Degree and completion of an accredited interpreter training program.
  • Familiarity with video conferencing platforms such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams.
  • Knowledge of services and accommodations for deaf and hard of hearing students.
