Mohegan Lake, New York, United States Shrub Oak International School Full time
Position Overview

The Sign Language Educational Facilitator is a year-round hourly role, overseen by the Lead Educational Interpreter. This position is dedicated to assisting D/HH students in achieving their ITEP objectives and diploma prerequisites through collaboration with classroom educators and clinical team members. The facilitator will foster a robust partnership with faculty and clinical staff to implement a tailored, evidence-based educational program that reflects each student's unique interests, strengths, and requirements. The role involves ensuring communication access for D/HH students through American Sign Language (ASL) and signed English.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Facilitate communication access using sign language (ASL), signed English, spoken English, cultural mediation, and visual accessibility knowledge within the educational environment.
  • Engage in training sessions, workshops, and professional development opportunities focused on educational interpreting, IEP participation, specialized vocabulary, AAC utilization, and DeafBlind and DeafDisabled specialties, under the guidance of the Lead Educational Interpreter.
  • Advocate for necessary services, accommodations, and accessibility for D/HH, DeafBlind, and DeafDisabled students as required.
  • Attend collaborative meetings regarding accessibility, accommodations, and curriculum with the consulting teacher of the deaf, clinical staff, transitions team, and elective instructors.
  • Provide interpreting services and communication accessibility during academic sessions, parent meetings, ITEP meetings, and institutional events involving D/HH, DeafBlind, DeafDisabled, and hearing students, staff, and parents.
  • Prepare for interpreting tasks by utilizing designated preparation time and resources, including collaboration with colleagues and research.
  • Document and communicate student progress with the transdisciplinary team; participate in relevant meetings concerning student development.
  • Set up and modify materials, equipment, and assistive devices for student use as directed, including adherence to school emergency protocols.
  • Participate in ITEP and district CSE meetings as a member of the educational team.
  • Prioritize interpreting assignments effectively, ensuring educational classroom content takes precedence over other interpreting needs.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student information, sharing details only on a need-to-know basis with the educational team.
  • Serve as a sign language model for D/HH, DeafBlind, and DeafDisabled students, presenting content at a language level that is most comprehensible to each individual.
  • May assist in interpreting during crisis intervention and behavioral management as necessary.
  • Utilize the RID Code of Professional Conduct and EIPA Guidelines for Professional Conduct to inform professional and ethical decision-making.
  • Provide tutoring support to D/HH, DeafBlind, and DeafDisabled students, including preliminary exposure to content-specific vocabulary and opportunities for guided practice.
  • Encourage social development by informally teaching conversational signs to teachers, staff, and peers.
  • Support the overall safety, productivity, and operations of the school within the limits of compensated working hours, ensuring that these expectations do not interfere with the need for educational interpreting services.

Qualifications:
Required:
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • A minimum of one year of interpreting experience with the D/HH population, preferably in a K-12 educational environment and/or experience with DeafDisabled students.

Preferred:
  • Completion of an accredited interpreter training program (ITP) is strongly preferred, although relevant experience with D/HH, DeafBlind, and DeafDisabled students may be considered.
  • Experience in a supervised internship or practicum within an educational setting.
  • Successful completion of the written portion of the RID certification exam or the EIPA with a score of 3.5 or higher.
  • Familiarity with common video conferencing platforms such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams.
  • Knowledge of D/HH, DeafBlind, and DeafDisabled services, assistive listening devices/technology, and accommodations in educational contexts.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8 AM - 4 PM

Compensation: $30-35/hour
