Position Summary:

The Support Specialist is a full-time, non-residential role that collaborates closely with departmental directors to provide essential direct care and administrative assistance for daily operations. This position involves guiding and mentoring students, assisting with emergency protocols, and working alongside all members of the educational staff. As an educator and mentor, the Support Specialist plays a crucial role in fostering an inclusive environment and promoting specific skill development tailored to the unique needs of our student population.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee daily direct care needs and operational programs.
  • Act as a liaison between departments and key offices relevant to daily operations.
  • Build and maintain trusting relationships with students, understanding their individual interests, needs, and goals to cultivate a positive environment.
  • Communicate, enforce, and support all policies and procedures to students, fostering a respectful and inclusive community that encourages self-advocacy and independence.
  • Complete administrative duties, including managing shift logs, maintenance requests, incident reports, and tracking behavioral interventions.
  • Proactively engage with students in crisis to de-escalate situations using established protocols.
  • Respond to and report emergencies or urgent situations promptly to the appropriate staff members in accordance with institutional policies.
  • Facilitate both on-campus and off-campus programming based on the needs outlined in each student's Individualized Transition and Education Plan (ITEP).
  • Advise and mentor students on various life skills, collaborating with faculty and clinicians as necessary.
  • Support the individualized ITEP and developmental goals for each student, documenting efforts and progress.
  • Serve as a resource for students and staff, providing guidance in planning programs and activities.
  • Develop, present, track, and evaluate educational initiatives for students.
  • Collaborate with departmental staff to ensure students maintain a structured schedule of events and daily activities.
  • Attend all required meetings and training sessions.
  • Assist with other departmental responsibilities as needed.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of one year of relevant professional experience is required; experience in a school or boarding program is advantageous.
  • A relevant combination of post-secondary education and experience working with special needs populations is preferred.
  • Experience working with adolescents and young adults on the autism spectrum is essential.
  • Experience with individuals exhibiting challenging behaviors is beneficial.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a transdisciplinary program to support students effectively.
  • Proficiency in multiple languages is a plus.

Location: Mohegan Lake, NY

Compensation: $23/hour

Physical Requirements:
Physical demands may include sitting, walking, or standing for extended periods. Occasionally, lifting or carrying items up to 25 pounds and rearranging furniture for events may be required.

Work Schedule:
Shifts may include weekday mornings, afternoons, evenings, overnights, and weekends. Full-time staff typically work a traditional 40-hour week.
