Position Summary:
The Individual Support Specialist role is a vital year-round position that collaborates closely with the Director of Education and Classroom Teachers throughout the academic day. This position is responsible for delivering direct support to a designated student, focusing on guidance, mentorship, and academic assistance. The Specialist plays a crucial role in crisis management, emergency response, and teamwork with all members of the educational staff. This role is essential in fostering an inclusive environment and supporting the unique developmental needs of our students.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborate directly with classroom educators to support the assigned student under the guidance of a certified Special Education Teacher.
- Prepare and modify educational materials and assistive devices for the student’s use as needed.
- Encourage and facilitate the student’s journey towards independence.
- Supervise and assist students during both educational and recreational activities.
- Provide assistance with routine personal care tasks that do not require nursing intervention.
- Monitor and support the student in achieving their Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals.
- Effectively prioritize and manage work assignments.
- Complete tasks efficiently and seek additional responsibilities as time allows.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding student information.
- Engage in professional development opportunities as required.
- Assist in the administration and documentation of assessments.
- Participate in crisis intervention strategies as necessary, employing established protocols to de-escalate situations.
- Report emergencies and urgent situations promptly to the appropriate personnel.
- Work collaboratively within a team-oriented environment.
- Attend IEP meetings and staff meetings as directed.
- Ensure adherence to safety protocols.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Skills:
- A minimum of 48 college credits, an Associate's degree, or successful completion of the Para Assessment Test, or a relevant combination of education and experience working with special needs populations.
- Experience with adolescents and young adults on the autism spectrum or with developmental disabilities.
- A strong passion for mentoring and empowering students in their self-advocacy and personal growth.
- Knowledge of crisis prevention and intervention strategies, along with behavior intervention plans.
- Ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal forms.
- Proficiency in using educational technology systems.
- Willingness to accept constructive feedback for continuous improvement.
- Demonstrated reliability in attendance and punctuality.
- Strong organizational and facilitation skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and manage multiple tasks effectively.
- Flexibility in working hours is essential.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
Experience:
- Relevant education and experience in supporting special needs populations as an Educational Assistant, Paraprofessional, or similar role.
- Minimum of one year of professional experience in a similar setting is required.
- Experience with individuals exhibiting challenging behaviors is beneficial.
- Ability to communicate in multiple languages is a plus.
- A valid driver's license is preferred.
Compensation: $20/hour
