Position Overview

ROLE SUMMARY:

The Family Peer Specialist collaborates with the CN Guidance Youth ACT Team to provide essential services to individuals diagnosed with severe emotional disturbances (SED) and their families, particularly those who have not benefited from conventional service delivery methods.


EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND:

A high school diploma is preferred. A credential recognized by the Office of Mental Health and specialized training is preferred, or must be obtained within six months of employment.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

Must be a parent or caregiver with firsthand experience in raising a child with significant mental health challenges, possessing a deep understanding of the related difficulties and available community resources.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Act as a positive role model for clients and their families.
  2. Provide education on self-help techniques and group processes to clients and their families.
  3. Share effective coping strategies based on personal experiences.
  4. Assist in teaching symptom management skills and clarifying rehabilitation and recovery objectives.
  5. Support families in building community connections and natural supports to improve their quality of life, while helping them reconnect with existing resources.
  6. Guide families in implementing strategies to encourage positive behavior in their children, in alignment with clinician recommendations.
  7. Offer individual or group training for parents regarding the behavioral health needs of their children.
  8. Facilitate the sharing of relevant information to promote collaborative decision-making and keep clients informed of their progress.
  9. Complete Quality Improvement (QI) training during onboarding and participate in refresher courses as necessary.
  10. Foster an inclusive culture that values diverse strengths, perspectives, and experiences among all employees.
  11. Identify and implement quality improvement initiatives as part of professional development.
  12. Encourage ongoing quality improvement efforts and provide resources for professional growth.
  13. Adhere to safety protocols to maintain a secure working environment for all staff.
  14. Perform additional duties as assigned by the Team Leader.
