Job Overview

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Family Peer Specialist collaborates with the CN Guidance Youth ACT Team to provide essential services to individuals diagnosed with severe emotional disturbances (SED) and their families, particularly those whose needs have not been adequately addressed through conventional service methods.


EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND:

A high school diploma is preferred. A credential recognized by the Office of Mental Health, along with specialized training and supervision, is preferred or must be obtained within six months of employment.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

Individuals who have firsthand experience as a parent or caregiver of a child with significant mental health challenges, and who are well-acquainted with the related difficulties and available community resources.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Act as a positive role model for clients and their families.
  2. Provide education on self-help strategies and group processes to clients and their families.
  3. Share effective coping techniques based on personal experiences.
  4. Instruct on symptom management and assist in defining rehabilitation and recovery objectives.
  5. Support families in establishing community connections and natural supports to improve their quality of life, helping them to rediscover existing resources in their lives.
  6. Guide families in implementing strategies to promote their child's positive behavior, following clinician recommendations.
  7. Deliver individual or group training focused on parenting skills related to behavioral health needs.
  8. Facilitate data sharing with relevant individuals to promote collaborative decision-making and keep clients informed of their progress.
  9. Complete Quality Improvement (QI) Training during onboarding and participate in ongoing QI training as necessary.
  10. Foster an inclusive culture that values the unique strengths, perspectives, and experiences of all employees, enhancing decision-making and innovation.
  11. Identify and engage in quality improvement training and activities as part of professional development.
  12. Encourage quality improvement initiatives and provide consistent resources for QI and professional growth.
  13. Adhere to all safety protocols to maintain a secure working environment for all staff, demonstrating a commitment to safety practices.
  14. Perform additional duties as assigned by the Team Leader.
