Department Overview

The Institute for Matter and Systems (IMS) is an interdisciplinary research entity at Georgia Tech, focusing on convergent research related to innovative materials and devices that address complex societal challenges.

Job Summary

This role serves as the primary advisor and subject matter expert within an academic or business unit, overseeing sponsored research program administration in alignment with institutional financial policies. Responsibilities include planning, managing, and executing financial support related to budgets, accounting, reporting, and grant administration. The position involves setting employee objectives, evaluating performance, providing constructive feedback, and making compensation recommendations. Regular interactions will occur with faculty and staff, and supervisory responsibilities will include managing assigned personnel.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Pre-Award Management: Oversee and coordinate sponsored research pre-award activities, including proposal development, budget preparation, and database management.
  2. Post-Award Oversight: Manage post-award activities, serving as a liaison for faculty, monitoring expenditures, ensuring compliance, and generating reports.
  3. Accounting Operations: Handle sponsored research accounting tasks, including budget updates, financial reporting, and forecasting.
  4. Advisory Role: Provide guidance to business operations management on sponsored research initiatives and proposals.
  5. Staff Management: Direct and supervise grants administration and accounting staff involved in sponsored research support.
  6. Liaison Activities: Collaborate with the Office of Sponsored Programs and Grants & Contracts Accounting on research grants and contracts.
  7. Additional Duties: Perform other related responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications

Educational Requirements: A Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Accounting, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience: A minimum of three to five years of relevant professional experience is required.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred certifications include Certified Research Administrator, Certified Pre-Award Research Administrator, or Certified Financial Research Administrator. Supervisory experience is also preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

This position necessitates a professional understanding of financial and accounting principles as they pertain to sponsored research. Proficiency in proposal development and regulatory requirements is essential, along with familiarity with office and spreadsheet applications relevant to grants and contract administration. Strong planning, attention to detail, problem-solving, and communication skills are required.
