The VP, Business Development will develop and implement Breakthrough T1D's overall strategy for research partnerships with industry groups, communities and companies to advance type 1 diabetes discoveries and therapeutic development. In this position, the VP will be responsible for managing research alliances with all industry partners to ensure industry partnership projects meet milestones and achieve goals as quickly, effectively, and efficiently as possible.
This is a hybrid position based out of the NYC office.
Specific Responsibilities
- Work with internal teams to identify, develop, and execute new business opportunities aligned with Breakthrough T1D research strategy and organizational mission goals
- Build relationships with industry partners to develop research and development plans in T1D-prioritized therapeutic areas, including defining the scope of partnered projects, intermediate milestones and associated payment schedules, and project deliverables.
- Develop a business strategy and oversight for new partnership deals by way of establishment, negotiation and execution of contracts.
- Proactively identify, solicit, advocate and negotiate new strategic research alliances with biotech and pharmaceutical companies, government, and non-profit organizations.
- Research and analysis of the business environment. Perform due diligence on proposed collaborations, including assessment of financial health, competitive landscape, commercialization plans, etc. Monitor progress on existing collaborations and identify solutions if challenges arise.
- Propose and evaluate strategies to streamline processes for developing industry partnerships following best practice models. Create efficiencies around due diligence, review process, approvals, and finalizing contracts.
- Develop new strategies and mechanisms to support industry partners developing T1D therapies.
- Lead a high-performing business development team including direct reports.
- Liaise with internal stakeholders in a cross-functional matrix organization, such as Regulatory and Health Policy, Medical Affairs, Venture Philanthropy Fund, Development, and Marketing and Communications.
- Represent partnership strategy and outcomes to senior leadership and governing committees.
Qualifications
- Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent degree required; and MBA or equivalent degree preferred
- At least 15 years of experience in business development and alliance management experience within the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry
- Strategic thinker with the ability to drive innovation and adapt to a rapidly changing scientific landscape
- Demonstrated ability to lead, direct, and manage a multidisciplinary team in a matrix management environment
Target Salary - $200k - $240k
