The Unity Council is a non-profit Social Equity Development Corporation with a 60-year history in the Fruitvale neighborhood of Oakland. Our mission is to promote social equity and improve quality of life by building vibrant communities where everyone can work, learn, and thrive.

Our programs aim to provide the community with the tools, knowledge, and resources to transform their lives and ultimately achieve their long-term educational, career, and financial goals. These holistic programs and services reach more than 8,000 individuals and families annually in five languages. Programs include: early childhood education, youth mentorship and leadership development, employment services, career readiness training, housing and financial stability, senior citizen services, affordable housing and neighborhood development, and arts and cultural events. Our work expands beyond the Fruitvale district and now reaches across Oakland and into Concord. The Unity Council employs a diverse workforce of more than 350 people who reflect the linguistic, cultural, and ethnic identity of the communities we serve.

Program Summary

The Community Programs department offers a spectrum of integrated services to remove barriers and develop skills and resources for youth, adults, seniors and small-business owners to achieve and maintain equitable economic, career, housing and wellness outcomes. Services include: 1) achievement, career and wellness youth programs; 2) career, employment, financial and housing coaching and resources; 3) small-business development in the Fruitvale and East Oakland; 4) support services for our low-income properties and for seniors. Services are multi-lingual, culturally-rooted and available for Oakland or East Bay residents (based on funding).

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Director of Economic Development, the Special Projects Coordinator is responsible for assisting the Economic Development team laying the groundwork for future programming and business lines, the management of key administrative projects, programmatic triage, coordination of calendars and projects and development of meeting agendas, events planning, correspondence, budget monitoring and the development of marketing and other supporting documents. The position’s responsibilities will include working at departmental intersections as a collaborative liaison within the Community Program’s Department, across departments throughout the organization and with external partners. A successful candidate will possess a welcoming demeanor, be solutions oriented and able to exercise sound judgment, organized with a meticulous eye for detail and the agility to execute despite an ever shifting economic environment.

Responsibilities

  • Take the lead on all special projects assigned by the Director of Economic Development which will include a variety of tasks within a broad range of economic arenas – workforce development, land use and planning, business services, the arts, civic engagement, research and evaluation and the cultivation of various economic development partnerships.
  • Organize and monitor project schedules and see that deadlines are met.
  • Schedule meetings and appointments, arrange and coordinate events, and manage travel itineraries for economic development staff.
  • Lead the agenda and organizational process for key internal and external meetings;
  • Prepare Director with the right documents and information for meetings.
  • Collaborate with the whole project team, contributing to the entire project lifecycle
  • Work closely with the Managers and Coordinators, Data and Compliance and Grants Accountants to support monitoring, evaluation, reporting and billing.
  • Arrange program events to take place outside of the work place – civic engagement meetings, business lunches/meetings, etc.
  • Liaise with internal staff at all levels.
  • Attend external meetings as assigned.
  • Act proactively and without much supervision, anticipating needs and following through.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications.

  • High School Diploma; some college preferred
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent verbal communication
  • Highly collaborative
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in administration, coordination or customer service positions
  • Multi-cultural competency and ability to work with persons from diverse backgrounds
  • Friendly demeanor and able to provide excellent customer service to team mates and other partners.
  • Flexibility and ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to work in an efficient manner with time sensitive tasks and manage timelines
  • Ability to be a self-starter, assume responsibility for achieving outcomes, balance competing priorities, and demonstrate a collaborative, solution oriented, team-building approach

Essential functions

  • Advanced computer skills with strong MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), social media skills and desktop publishing.
  • Regularly required to operate standard office equipment (personal computer, photocopier, fax, etc.)
  • Regularly required to sit for long periods of time, and occasionally stand and walk.
  • Regularly required to use hands to operate computer and other office equipment.
