Director, Mission Volunteer Engagement

Full-Time ∙ Exempt-Salaried ∙ Remote

Looking for a rewarding career to make meaningful change? For more than 25 years, ZERO Prostate Cancer has been a powerful force fighting for a cure and providing critical support to patients and families. As the leading national nonprofit with the mission to end prostate cancer, ZERO advances research, improves the lives of all who are impacted by the disease, and inspires action. ZERO has recently been recognized again as one of the “Best Nonprofits to Work For” by The NonProfit Times (nine out of the last ten years), it is clear we make supporting our team and community a top priority. Our commitment to providing an award-winning culture that fosters growth, camaraderie, and diversity is unwavering. ZERO’s high responsibility and high freedom philosophy helps team members excel professionally and thrive personally while making a life-saving difference for those impacted by this devastating disease. Working at ZERO means more than a job, it means being part of an incredible community of people that inspire each other every day.

The Director, Mission Volunteer Engagement role is responsible for organization-wide, grassroots strategies encompassing ZERO Prostate Cancer’s (ZERO) volunteer program, including comprehensive recruitment practices, screening, orientation, training, record keeping, and evaluation. The Director will successfully work across teams (patient programs, education, government relations, advocacy, health equity) to coordinate all mission-related volunteer efforts for the organization. This role engages mission program volunteers in setting and pursuing best practices, driving continuous improvement, and developing and implementing innovative structures to benefit all of ZERO’s mission programs.

ZERO strives to empower our team through three key values which are being humble, hungry, and smart. Our team members demonstrate they are humble by working together and defining success collectively. They are hungry to advance our mission, while going above and beyond. In addition, they are emotionally smart by understanding how their actions impact others.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Assess the organization’s need for volunteers to support the Mission (Patient Program and Education, Government Relations and Advocacy, and Health Equity) programs, determine roles, and establish as appropriate in consultation with program staff.
  • Participate in regular Mission Team meetings, working collaboratively to find ways to standardize, improve, and expand services.
  • Lead recruitment of new volunteers, expanding ZERO’s volunteer pool to include current corporate partners and new potential partners, as well as implementing other innovative strategies for growth.
  • Develop, in collaboration with Marketing and Communications, a comprehensive communications strategy to keep volunteers informed and engaged.
  • Identify volunteer development and training needs and collaborate with other Mission teams to develop an effective volunteer curriculum both generally and tailored to specific roles.
  • Lead the management of all volunteers at the ZERO signature events, including: Advocacy Summit, Support Group Leader Training, ZERO+1 Caregiver Retreat, Mission Health Fairs, community outreach events, and others.
  • Consciously create a team environment that is consistent with that of ZERO’s mission, vision, guiding principles and values.
  • Develop and maintain volunteer position descriptions, customizing them as necessary.
  • Create and maintain volunteer program materials (policies and procedures, applications, volunteer agreements, orientation handbooks).
  • Manage the database(s) used for tracking volunteers, projects, and service hours to ensure accurate statistics and reporting.
  • Create and execute annual budgets pertaining to volunteer costs across all programs.
  • Lead the development of an annual volunteer survey to determine opportunities for growth and improvement.
  • Create and/or maintain a streamlined group volunteer scheduling process.

Desired Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work across teams/departments.
  • Understanding of comprehensive volunteer recruitment, screening, orientation, training, and evaluation processes
  • Strong problem-solving skills to address challenges in volunteer recruitment, engagement, and retention.
  • Familiarity with current best practices in volunteer engagement and management.
  • Capacity to develop and implement innovative structures and strategies to enhance volunteer engagement and mission program support.
  • Understanding of health equity principles and their application in volunteer programs and mission-related activities.
  • Ability to lead and motivate volunteers, as well as manage volunteer programs effectively.
  • Proficiency in maintaining accurate records and data management systems for tracking volunteer activities and outcomes.
  • Exemplifies ZERO’s culture of humble, hungry and smart.
  • Ability to adapt to changing situations.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Health Education, Social Work, Community Development, Planning, Public Administration, Health policy, or similar field is preferred.
  • 7 - 10 years of previous experience supervising volunteers and managing paid staff.
