Reports to: Director of Volunteer Programs

Job Status: Full-time


Job Purpose: Zoo Atlanta’s Volunteer Team plays an integral role in supporting a variety of functions and teams throughout the Zoo. The Supervisor of Adult Volunteers advances the mission of Zoo Atlanta by overseeing all aspects of the Adult Volunteer Programs, from recruitment to training and ongoing records keeping. This position works as part of the Volunteer Programs team and collaborates cross departmentally to ensure all Zoo needs for volunteer support are met. In addition, this position works closely with the Interpretive Programs team of Education to assist with on-grounds programming and service area support. Key to this role is the understanding that volunteers play a critical role on Zoo Atlanta’s team by contributing their time and skills to all departments. This individual is an active member of the education team and represents the Education Department on necessary cross departmental teams. This position is responsible for the communication, recognition, retention, record keeping, and training of Zoo Atlanta’s adult volunteers. The Supervisor of Adult Volunteers should possess enthusiasm, creativity, excellent skills in customer service, communication, organization, and time management. This is a full-time position with a work schedule of Tuesday – Saturday 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. although nights and weekends are required to help support events within the Zoo.


Job Factors:

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Supervise and implement all aspects of the Education, Zoo Crew and Event volunteer programs
  • Develop program plans with goals and objectives for program participants
  • Develop and implement evaluation of the program goals and objectives and innovate programs as needed
  • Design and implement necessary training for all adult volunteers, including initial orientation as well as continuing education opportunities
  • Assess volunteer’s skills and place volunteers based on the organization’s needs
  • Address questions, concerns, and disciplinary incidents as they arise
  • Conduct annual performance evaluation of volunteer’s participation and performance
  • Work with service area staff to ensure that volunteers are adequately trained, supervised, and recognized
  • Conduct all background screening for volunteers and maintain eligibility records
  • Work as part of the Volunteer Programs team to ensure that all volunteer programs (Family, Volunteen, Intern, Education, Zoo Crew, Event, External Group) are supported
  • Maintain all data records associated with the volunteer program, including the volunteer database (Volgistics)
  • Work closely with all Zoo departments to provide volunteer support for daily as well as special Zoo events
  • Oversee all programmatic materials, including uniforms, training materials and associated items as part of the volunteer habitat
  • Create and manage Appreciation and Recognition Programs throughout the year
  • Plan and implement all volunteer communication, from weekly emails to quarterly meetings, ensuring accurate and efficient sharing of information
  • Maintain Animal Handling status with Ambassador Animal department, to oversee Education (Docent) Animal Handlers
  • Always ensure the safety of volunteers, and perform emergency procedure responsibilities as necessary
  • Communicate Zoo Atlanta policies to all volunteers and ensure adherence to the policies
  • Must be willing to support Zoo Atlanta’s Vision, Mission and Values statement
  • Any other miscellaneous projects/assignments assigned by Zoo Atlanta’s Education management team


Other Duties:

  • Represent the Education Department on various Zoo wide teams
  • Must maintain all Zoo Atlanta mandatory training (i.e. customer service training)
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google Workspace.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities.
  • Extremely strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Other duties as assigned


Qualifications:

  • 2 years of volunteer coordination required
  • Previous experience in event planning (ideal not required)
  • Understanding of informal education/Interpretation
  • Must possess strong leadership capabilities and the ability to motivate and encourage others
  • Strong awareness and appreciation of diversity
  • Must be comfortable interacting with the public and the ability to be sensitive and considerate to all people
  • Ability to be an effective team member and leader
  • Must possess excellent communication and writing skills
  • Must be able to exercise good judgment and discretion at all times
  • Multi-task oriented and must be comfortable working in a fast-paced work environment
  • Demonstrated public speaking and presentation skills
  • Interact with a high level of professionalism and be diplomatic in your approach to others.
  • Must be willing to participate in training sessions to learn more about the zoo, animals, activities, associations and special programs offered by Zoo Atlanta
  • Ability to interface professionally with all levels of volunteers, employees and guests
  • Bilingual in conversational Spanish preferred
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office, e-mail and database management (Zoo Atlanta uses Volgistics)
  • Flexible schedule as weekend, holiday, and some evening shifts are required
  • Professional dress, appearance, and conduct
  • Should possess an appreciation of wildlife, environmental education and be in agreement with the philosophy and the mission of Zoo Atlanta.
  • Zoo Atlanta is open to the public 363 days out of the year, therefore, all positions at Zoo Atlanta may require employees to work weekends, holidays and evenings.


Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Volunteer Management, Human Resources, Psychology, Education or another related field.


Driving Requirements:

  • Must have a valid Georgia driver’s license


Physical Demands:

  • This position will spend approximately 70% outdoors and 30% indoors. This position will require frequent walking, occasional physical lift and carry of 20 lbs., some bending. Must be comfortable working in inclement weather conditions.
