This position is located in the Social Media Section of the Communications Campaigns Service in the Campaigns and Country Operations Division, Department of Global Communications (DGC).

The Section is responsible for devising, implementing and managing the multilingual social media strategy of the Department, in line with its overall communications guidance, priorities and messaging and as guided by administrative policies on the institutional use of social media.

The incumbent will report directly to the Public Information Officer in the Section. This position is temporarily available until 31 December 2024, with a possibility of an extension.

Responsibilities

Within limits of delegated authority, and under the guidance of the Section Chief, the Public Information Assistant will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Serves as a first point of contact for the social media team, escalating issues to the appropriate focal point;
  • Manages information sharing platforms and email lists to help coordinate social media efforts within the team, the Secretariat and around the UN System, including training colleagues on the use of these products when necessary;
  • Researches, compiles and organizes information and reference materials from various sources for reports, briefings, meetings/conferences, etc., as needed for the team's workflow;
  • Assists in the preparation of presentation materials using appropriate technology/software;
  • Helps draft talking points and report inputs;
  • Contributes to the production of social media products by curating content, transcribing video files, creating quote cards, monitoring comments on social media platforms and more;
  • Responds or drafts responses to routine correspondence and other communications;
  • Monitors processes and schedules related the Section's outputs, products, tasks, etc.;
  • Maintains calendar/schedules and distribution lists;
  • Maintains files (both paper and electronic) and databases for the Section;
  • Assists in providing software and office equipment support;
  • Schedules and coordinates meetings with relevant offices to help facilitate social media team events at UNHQ;
  • Respond to ad hoc requests for Social Media Section services;
  • Performs other functions as required.

Work Experience


Three years of experience in public information, international broadcasting, journalism, public relations, marketing, international relations, information studies, graphic design, or related fields is required.

The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to one year for candidates who possess a first-level university degree or higher.

Experience using information-sharing tools in the context of social media management is desirable. Experience monitoring comments on global social media platforms is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which will be followed by a competency-based interview.

Special Notice

This position is temporarily available for six months through 31 December 2024, with a possibility of an extension. Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her.

In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers in accordance with established rules and procedures.
