Position Overview

The Strategy & Public Impact division serves as the central hub for insights and information regarding the users and impact of The New York Public Library. Our mission is to assist decision-makers and program staff through business intelligence, impact evaluation, strategic discussions, user research, and data mentorship.

We are in search of an intern for the academic year to aid in defining the Library's significance in the intellectual, cultural, and educational spheres of both local and global communities. This role will involve identifying avenues for innovation and leadership across our research centers, neighborhood branches, and digital platforms, while advocating for community needs. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals passionate about public service and libraries to gain valuable experience in strategy, qualitative and quantitative research, data analytics, and impact assessment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in the design and execution of various qualitative research initiatives, including large-scale surveys, focus groups, and individual user testing.
  • Manage logistics for qualitative research activities, such as survey distribution and interview scheduling.
  • Collaborate with team members to translate operational inquiries into qualitative research projects.
  • Analyze primary research outcomes and Library usage data to derive insights that inform strategic decisions and assess the effectiveness of programmatic initiatives.
  • Prepare research reports and presentations for diverse internal and external audiences, providing actionable, evidence-based recommendations to enhance program design and user experience.
  • Conduct external industry and market research to contextualize institutional findings and explore new research avenues.
  • Support the team in various capacities as required.
Required Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's degree program in a relevant field such as Data Analytics, Information Science, Public Policy, Psychology, or other related social sciences.
  • Experience in data analysis and qualitative research methodologies, including surveys, interviews, and focus groups.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google applications.
  • Familiarity with experimental design, testing, and evaluation methodologies, along with exposure to research techniques and tools.
  • Strong listening and observational skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate analytical insights and methodologies in verbal, visual, and written formats.
  • Demonstrated success in collaborative work and building trusting relationships within a diverse organizational environment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Enrollment in a graduate program in a relevant field, including Library Science.
  • 1-2 years of relevant academic or professional experience in research, user insights, or impact assessment roles.
