SI 649 - Information Visualization

A .50 fraction GSI position offers a monthly stipend, tuition waiver, and health insurance. The expected work commitment is roughly 20 hours per week. This appointment runs from August 26 through December 31, 2024 (from an employment/health benefit perspective). There could be prep time before the employment start date and all work for this course will be completed by the end of December (or slightly earlier). All of the work hour details will be spelled out in the fraction calculation form for the person hired for this position. At the time of application, please include your availability for teaching all currently scheduled sections so that all GSI assignments can be made with everyone?s availability in hand. This information can be included in your cover letter.

SI 649 Information Visualization. Introduction to information visualization. Topics include data and image models, the grammar of graphics, multidimensional and multivariate data, design principles for visualization, hierarchical, network, textual and collaborative visualization, and the visualization pipeline, data processing for visualization, visual representations, visualization system interaction design, and impact of perception. Emphasizes the design of effective visualizations to help people understand data, and teaches students how to construct visualizations using graphics application programming interfaces (APIs) and analysis tools.

Responsibilities*

Assisting with course planning, attending course lectures and labs, running some labs, having office hours to meet with students and responding to inquiries by email or online, attending weekly staff meetings, and grading student assignments and exams. The duties also include working with the students to help them as they work with the programming assignments using visualization toolkits such as Altair (python) and Tableau. Duties also include giving students feedback on prototypes of visualizations to help them develop more effective ways of communicating their data.

  • UM Graduate student in good standing;
  • Must meet eligibility criteria as defined in the ;
  • Must be lawfully able to be employed in the United States, sponsorship to obtain such status is not available at this time;
  • Previous success as an SI 649 student or equivalent combination of course work and experience.
Desired Qualifications*

Experience or interest in teaching; strong communication and analytical skills; experience teaching programming and technology skills to beginning students.

Decision Making Process

The application due date is August 21, 2024. All applications will be submitted for review to the faculty member teaching the course. After review of applications and possible interviews, decisions will be made by the faculty member teaching the course. It is anticipated that decisions will be made by early August.

Selection Process

Relevant academic preparation for teaching the course material including solid mastery of Python and hands-on experience with information visualization. Previous work as a teacher in a programming oriented course at the graduate level will also be helpful. Provide an example of prior instructional/work experience; relevance to graduate training; student evaluations if applicable.
