Summary

The graduate student research assistant will analyze electrical outages in Consumers Energy and DTE Energy service territories and deliver research outcomes to the Michigan Environmental Justice Coalition (MEJC). EEP is looking for a candidate who is proficient in report design and writing. The primary responsibilities for this position include:
  1. Conducting a literature review of existing research on electrical outages
  2. Working with EEP's Data Scientist to write research reports
  3. Making research findings accessible by creating digital (social media, presentation slides, etc.) and physical (flyers, brochures, etc.) distribution materials.
  4. Managing and organizing project materials, including note-taking in meetings and coordinating with stakeholders.
  5. Providing feedback on web applications developed as part of this project
Who We Are

The Energy Equity Project (EEP), an initiative of U of M's School for Environment and Sustainability (SEAS), seeks a graduate student to support analysis and report creation of the impacts of power outages in Michigan. The mission of EEP is to ensure communities of color, lower-income and frontline environmental justice communities have the power to determine their energy futures and secure an equitable share of benefits from the clean energy transition. One of EEP's priorities is to ally with frontline partners to challenge inequitable utility practices and outcomes.

EEP is working with Michigan Environmental Justice Coalition (MEJC) to address frequent and extended power outages. MEJC recognizes that Michigan residents pay some of the highest electric bills in the nation and suffer some of the worst service. These costs are disproportionately borne by Environmental Justice communities - Black, Brown, Indigenous and poor white communities that have seen the worst effects of pollution and climate change. This project will analyze and visualize secondary data on electrical outages in Consumers Energy and DTE Energy service territories. The analysis and visualization will support MEJC's policy advocacy efforts.

Required Qualifications*
  • An unwavering commitment to equity and justice
  • Familiarity with energy, climate, and environmental justice issues and related data considerations
  • Experience conducting literature reviews, categorizing research papers with a focus on analyzing quantitative methods
  • Ability to write scientific and academic style reports
  • Ability to translate reports and research findings into summary materials (social media posts, presentations)
  • Project management and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and learn new skills quickly
  • Experience in Graphic Design (preference for work in Canva)
Desired Qualifications*
  • Proficiency with Excel
  • Experience with R or Python
  • Familiarity with the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC)
Additional Information
  • Project Timeframe - July / August January 2025
  • Hourly Salary - $30 / Hour
  • Expected to be 10-20 hours per week (roughly a total effort of 160 hours throughout 5 months)
