Summary

Center for Campus Involvement Overview

The Center for Campus Involvement (CCI) is a dynamic, student-focused department that serves all undergraduate and graduate students through programs, student organization administration, and learning and development. Through meaningful involvement, CCI creates transformative experiences, a vibrant community, and lifelong memories for University of Michigan students. CCI recognizes and supports over 1,600 student organizations through education, advising, advocacy and services. CCI also implements over 300 social, educational, and cultural programs each year, focused on building community within and beyond University Unions' facilities.

University Unions Overview

University Unions (UU) drives community building and belonging through the integration of its three student unions (Michigan Union, Michigan League, Pierpont Commons), Center for Campus Involvement, Campus Information, academic meeting and dining facility (Palmer Commons), and close partnership with Conference & Event Services and Michigan Dining to provide student-focused and customer-oriented service to the campus community. Total budget volume for University Unions approximated $20 million. University Unions directly employs over 50 regular staff and 250 student staff.

Job Summary

You will lead the Student Programs teams responsibilities within the Center for Campus Involvement to implement and assess an array of 200 social and community building co-curricular programs in University Unions' facilities and across campus each academic year. You will directly supervise 2-3 full-time staff; indirectly supervise 2-3 graduate interns and 18-20 undergraduate student employees. You will ensure the advisement of the University Activities Center (UAC), composed of 17 sponsored student organizations offering live performances and activities for the campus community. The Student Theatre Arts Complex (STAC) is a pre-production facility used as rehearsal space for UAC and other performance-based student organizations and operates as part of your team. You will drive community building and belonging through inclusive programs that create transformative experiences for University of Michigan students.

Responsibilities*

Leadership of Functional Area (40%)
  • Provide management assistance to the CCI Associate Director and Director in the leadership and development of 200 social and community building programs for University of Michigan students.
  • Lead your team to implement new and existing programming initiatives in partnership with University departments and student organizations to meet current opportunities and needs.
  • Hire, train, and supervise 2-3 full-time staff, 2-3 graduate interns, and 18-20 undergraduate student employees who work collaboratively to build community and create student life on campus by offering student programs.
  • Ensure the daily operation and future planning of the Student Theatre Arts Complex (e.g., staffing model, customer service, space reservations and needs).
  • Partner with CCI staff and campus colleagues to provide a well-considered plan for building community and belonging through student organizations and programs across campus.
  • Use KPIs, learning outcomes, and other assessment tools to regularly update and influence student programming work.
  • Analyze, evaluate, and determine various decisions in consultation with CCI Associate Director and Director.
  • Remain student-focused, collaborative, future thinking and creative in student programming work.
Program Management (30%)
  • Provide oversight of the Student Programs team in CCI to develop a co-curricular program plan through University Unions' facilities and across campus, including the development of new and existing initiatives such as UMix Late Night, University Unions Weekly, Finals Breakfast, Game Day at the Union, and Welcome to Michigan events.
  • Provide support and development for the University Activities Center and its 17 student organizations, including student training and the implementation of dynamic programs across university facilities and performance venues.
  • In advising UAC, model informed-practices of how sponsoring units advise sponsored student organizations at the University of Michigan.
  • Manage the CCI student programs calendar of events.
  • Partner with Conference & Event Services, University Unions Operations, Outdoor Events/Facilities and Operations, and others to ensure a seamless program planning process.
  • Partner with Wolverine Wellness and Student Life's High-Risk Planning Team to make informed programmatic decisions based on students' needs.
Financial Management (20%)
  • Develop and track spending of budgets in partnership with CCI Associate Director/Director and Student Life Budget and Finance.
  • Coordinate the review and negotiation of entertainment contracts, including contract riders pertaining to all technical aspects of shows as well as ensure all contracts comply with all laws and University policies.
  • Responsible for departmental purchasing and procurement policies and procedures.
  • Maintain accurate internal records and budget line projections.
University Unions and Student Life Service (10%)
  • As a member of the CCI/UU and Student Life, serve on committees and work teams such as the UU Management Team.
  • Serve on the Welcome to Michigan Committee.
  • Serve on the Student Life Activism Planning and Response Team.
  • Participate in staff training and professional development opportunities.
Required Qualifications*
  • Bachelor's degree
  • 1-3 years of student activities experience
  • 1-3 years of supervision experience
Desired Qualifications*
  • Master's degree in higher education, student affairs, social work or other related field
  • 4 years or more of professional experience

Financial/Budgetary Responsibility
  • Responsible for budgets of approximately $500,000, ensuring high levels of financial integrity from staff and monthly budget reporting.
  • Develop budgets and achieve financial expectations. Balance the auxiliary needs of generating revenue with being focused on students as primary stakeholders.
Working conditions
  • Typical work hours that are adjusted based on weekends, evenings and other hours as required.

Additional Information

Selected candidates whose start date is after 4/1/2024 or before 8/31/2024 will not be eligible for the university FY 24-25 salary/merit plan unless otherwise notified.

This role may have reporting obligations under Title IX and Clery.
