The Chemist at the Lake Charles Refinery is responsible for ensuring that the day-to-day operations of the laboratory are carried out in a timely and consistent manner. This role performs or coordinates special testing requirements, assesses product conformance to specification, and provides customer support on testing matters such as test method applicability and interpretation of results.
Responsibilities May Include:
Technical resource for laboratory equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair. Manage spare parts inventory for lab equipment, instrumentation, etc. Technical resource for the set-up of laboratory instrumentation; coordinate instrument data transfers with the existing lab data acquisition infrastructure. Develop and maintain an effective maintenance program and protocols for laboratory instrumentation. Point of contact for laboratory support systems, problems, and repairs. Perform required quality control activities to ensure instrumentation is calibrated and operating per applicable guidelines/best practices. Document, track, and report on calibration status and maintenance activities. Coordinate the development and implementation of quality control procedures to monitor the process control of Laboratory operations. Ensure testing procedures are kept up to date. Serving as technical advisor to quality technicians. Ensure the fulfillment of customer technical requests (. samples, data, troubleshooting). Counsels and consults with the Laboratory Leadership Team, Optimization & Planning, Operations Supervisors, Engineers, and Unit Operators. Provide technical assistance for project work and/or operational problems dealing with chemistry and/or instrumental analyses. Liaising closely with the other elements of the site operations and optimization groups to ensure data relating to the needs of site operations is made available in a timely and accurate manner. Acting as customer contact for Areas in the plant and attending Area meetings. Oversee the operation of the Laboratory information management system including any necessary troubleshooting. Ability to develop new, and modify existing, analytical procedures to assist the laboratory in providing accurate and precise analyses to support refinery goals. Performs quality assurance work in adherence to the Laboratory Quality Assurance Program to provide technically sound results to Laboratory customers. Responsible for the safety/health of self and those working with you, promoting the health and safety of others, and performing quality work in a safe and environmentally conscientious manner. Responsible for complying with Company policies and procedures, established standards, and governmental regulations (Federal, State, & Local). Steps in as temporary supervisor when necessary and assists in lab technician training.Required Qualifications:
Legally authorized to work in the job posting country Associate of Applied Science in Chemical Laboratory Technology or equivalent 5 or more years of refining or chemical laboratory experience Willing and able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC). Information can be found at /for-industry/twic Must be willing and able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to comply with the following: Travel up to 5% of the time Occasional on-call duties Work extended hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays Transport articles up to 50 pounds Work safely near large, hot, high-speed machines Climb ladders and stairs up to 50 feet in height Workaround chemicals, including acids and bases Workaround hydrocarbons under high pressure and heat Work outside in harsh weather conditions Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toe shoes, and ear and eye protection) Maintain face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean-shaven)Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor of Science in Chemistry or equivalent Advanced proficiency working in Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) Ability to work with cross-functional teams and groups Experience with computer-based instrumentation Develop and communicate clear & specific strategies Accepts ownership, is accountable & delivers on commitments Effective written and oral communication skills including the ability to communicate in a way that gains agreement and commitment Strong organizational skills Ability to handle multiple tasks and balance short-term and long-term priorities Create a free flow of information Drive company values, including valuing all people, ethics, safety, and environmental leadership Understand and utilize functional expertise to contribute to the success of the business Encourage creativity, innovation, and continuous improvement Have the courage to surface and resolve conflicts in a timely manner Influence management skillsThe Lake Charles Refinery is located in Westlake, Louisiana. Refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrocracking, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. Facilities also include a specialty coker and calciner. The refinery processes a mixture of light to heavy, low- and high sulfur and low- and high-acid crude oils. It receives domestic, Canadian and other foreign crude oil through truck, pipeline, marine transportation and terminals, including the Beaumont and Clifton Ridge terminals and the Bayou Bridge Pipeline. Lake Charles produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. Other products include off-road diesel, home heating oil, feedstock for our Excel Paralubes joint venture, specialty graphite petroleum coke and petroleum coke. Refined products are distributed in the southeastern and eastern United States by truck, rail car, barge or pipelines and exported to Latin America and West Africa.
