JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Guidance Counselor for Secondary Education is a professional educator equipped with a mental health perspective, adept at addressing the complexities faced by today’s diverse student body. These counselors play a crucial role within the broader educational framework, delivering a high-quality, comprehensive counseling and guidance program tailored for middle and high school students.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Design and execute an impactful school guidance and counseling initiative.
  • Clarify and advocate for the guidance and counseling program to students, educators, parents, administrators, and community stakeholders.
  • Build strong relationships with students to foster trust and engagement.
  • Encourage students to cultivate the skills, attitudes, and knowledge essential for a solid educational foundation.
  • Assist students in formulating an academic strategy and establish a system for annual review and documentation.
  • Facilitate appropriate course placements for individual students, including those with special needs, ensuring optimal educational experiences.
  • Oversee student records and transcripts to guarantee adherence to state and federal regulations.
  • Conduct classroom counseling and guidance activities in collaboration with teaching staff throughout the academic year.
  • Serve as a resource for teachers, integrating counseling content into the regular curriculum.
  • Collaborate with educational personnel across elementary, middle, and high schools to support students in transitioning smoothly to high school.
  • Guide individuals and groups in developing educational, personal, social, and career plans.
  • Communicate test results and their implications for academic, college/career, and personal/social development to students and parents.
  • Interpret individual or group test results for faculty and administration to enhance instructional practices.
  • Support families in navigating school-related challenges.
  • Engage with administrators, educators, students, parents, and the community regarding the counseling program's role in education.
  • Regularly assess student needs and utilize findings for program development.
  • Create a planning calendar for counseling program activities.
  • Participate in local, state, and national professional development programs, workshops, and conferences to enhance expertise.
  • Contribute to school and/or district committees, advisory boards, and task forces as necessary.
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with state and federal laws regarding school/workplace matters.
  • Demonstrate initiative in identifying opportunities for improvement within areas of responsibility.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development, demonstrating ethics and effective leadership.
  • Respond promptly and positively to inquiries and requests.
  • Adhere to school system regulations, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and applicable laws.
  • Report absences and manage leave according to Board policies and procedures.
  • Perform any additional job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s).
REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Effective interpersonal abilities, emphasizing collaboration with diverse groups.
  • Capability to manage budgets and develop tailored curriculum and programming for elementary students.
  • Problem-solving skills as a constructive team member.
  • Proficiency in technology (including Microsoft Office Suite) for communication, planning, instruction, data management, and report generation.
  • Physical capability to fulfill job responsibilities effectively.
  • Aptitude for compiling and analyzing data, interpreting relevant laws, policies, and regulations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Valid Alabama Professional Certificate in Education.
  • Master's Degree or higher in School Counseling from an accredited institution.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • At least 2 years of successful teaching experience with demonstrated impact on student achievement.
