Position Overview:
As a Guidance Counselor within Birmingham City Schools, you will play a pivotal role in fostering the academic and personal growth of secondary school students. Your expertise will contribute to a comprehensive counseling program designed to address the diverse needs of our student population.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and execute a robust guidance and counseling framework tailored for middle and high school students.
  • Communicate the objectives and benefits of the counseling program to students, educators, parents, and community stakeholders.
  • Build strong relationships with students to encourage their development of essential skills and knowledge.
  • Guide students in creating and reviewing their academic plans on an annual basis.
  • Assist in the appropriate placement of students, including those with special needs, to ensure optimal educational experiences.
  • Oversee student records and transcripts, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations.
  • Facilitate classroom counseling activities in collaboration with teaching staff throughout the academic year.
  • Serve as a resource for educators to integrate counseling principles into the educational curriculum.
  • Work with school personnel to support students transitioning to high school.
  • Assist students in developing educational, personal, social, and career plans.
  • Provide insights to students and parents regarding test results and their implications for future development.
  • Interpret assessment results for faculty and administration to enhance instructional strategies.
  • Support families in addressing school-related challenges.
  • Engage with various stakeholders to promote the counseling program's role in education.
  • Regularly assess student needs to inform program development.
  • Establish a calendar for counseling activities throughout the academic year.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge.
  • Contribute to school committees and advisory boards as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with legal standards.
  • Demonstrate proactive behavior in identifying areas for improvement.
  • Exhibit professional growth and ethical leadership.
  • Respond to inquiries and requests in a constructive manner.
  • Adhere to established policies and regulations.
  • Complete other duties as assigned by supervisors.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Strong oral and written communication abilities.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with a focus on collaboration.
  • Experience in budget management and curriculum development.
  • Problem-solving skills as a collaborative team member.
  • Proficiency in technology, particularly Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Physical capability to perform job responsibilities effectively.
  • Ability to analyze data and interpret relevant laws and policies.

Educational Requirements:

  • Valid Professional Certificate in Education.
  • Master's Degree in School Counseling from an accredited institution.

Preferred Experience:

  • At least two years of successful teaching experience with a proven impact on student achievement.
