Job Description

Position: Veterinary Kennel Attendant

Coyne Veterinary Center in Portage, Indiana is seeking a dedicated Kennel Attendant to provide exceptional care for our boarding and hospitalized animals.

The Kennel Attendant plays a crucial role in ensuring the well-being of pets by overseeing their daily care, feeding, and exercise routines. Attention to detail is essential, as the attendant must monitor pets for any signs of distress or changes in behavior, promptly communicating any concerns to veterinary staff. Responsibilities also include assisting veterinary technicians and doctors with various tasks, including animal restraint and client interactions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver compassionate care to all boarding and hospitalized animals.
  • Conduct regular checks of kennel areas to identify any abnormal behaviors or health issues.
  • Recognize and respond to emergency situations by collaborating with veterinary professionals.
  • Accurately document any unusual eating or elimination patterns.
  • Feed and hydrate animals according to established schedules and specific instructions.
  • Maintain cleanliness by disinfecting cages, runs, and common areas using appropriate methods.
  • Ensure all food and water bowls are cleaned and sanitized regularly.
  • Utilize personal protective equipment (PPE) as required for safety and hygiene.
  • Facilitate the movement of pets to outdoor runs for sanitation purposes multiple times daily.
  • Replace soiled bedding and manage laundry for hospital use.
  • Administer baths and grooming services as needed for departing pets.
  • Oversee outdoor activities, ensuring the safety of animals in open areas.
  • Assist with client interactions during pet check-in and check-out processes.
  • Administer preventative treatments as directed by veterinary staff.
  • Ensure proper identification for all animals in care.
  • Transport pets to treatment areas for necessary medical services.
  • Collect samples for veterinary analysis when required.
  • Maintain cleanliness throughout the facility, including sweeping and mopping floors.
  • Uphold a clean and organized environment in all areas of the facility.
  • Understand and implement proper animal handling techniques.
  • Provide informative tours of the facility to clients, explaining available services.
  • Manage inventory of food and supplies efficiently.
  • Comprehend infectious disease protocols to ensure a safe environment.
  • Communicate effectively with clients both in person and over the phone.
  • Participate in mandatory staff meetings to stay informed and engaged.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Capability to stand and walk on hard surfaces for extended periods.
  • Comfortable working in a noisy environment with various animal sounds.
  • Adhere to safety protocols regarding exposure to various substances.
